The Special Olympics Torch Passes Through Annapolis

Torch Run

At 2:00pm this afternoon, a Department of Natural Resources boat pulled up to City dock loaded with Special Olympians and a burning torch. It was handed off to Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop who led a cadre of officers and Olympians to the World War II Memorial. At the Memorial, the torch was passed off to officers from Anne Arundel County as it slowly makes it way across the State for the opening ceremonies of the Maryland Special Olympics this Friday in Towson. The torch began its journey on Monday in Ocean City and by the time it arrives in Towson, it will have criss crossed the entire state and its waterways carried by law enforcement officers and special Olympians.

As the relay team made its way across the Naval Academy Bridge, the smiles (and anguish) on the Olympians’ faces were obvious. They pushed on on the 4 mile trek listening to their coaches, “never give up.”

It’s days like these that make you proud to be a Marylander!
