New Events
Annapolis Arts and Crafts Festival—Back for its third year, the June 9-10, 2012 Annapolis Arts and Crafts Festival invites individuals to celebrate Maryland Wine Week by visiting its new Wine and Specialty Food Pavilion. Here they can sample and purchase wines from 17 Maryland vineyards including: Boordy Vineyards; Fiore Winery and Distillery; Solomon’s Island Winery; Bordeleau Vineyards and Winery; Elk Run Vineyards; Knob Hall Winery; Cove Point Winery; and Slack Winery. Wine will also be available to purchase by the glass or bottle. A beer garden and specialty foods round out the culinary offerings. As in past years, the festival includes live music and the prized works of more than 200 artists. Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show—Producers of the nation’s oldest in-water boat shows, United States Yacht Shows, Inc., presented the first annual Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show in April 2012. Held at City Dock in Annapolis, the show featured 100 exhibitors on land and 80 sailboats in the water – including new boats from notable builders: Passport, Leopard, Hunter, and Jeanneau, among others. Canines in the Courtyard—In April 2012, Paws Pet Boutique kicked off a new dog-friendly event series to benefit animal-related charities. Called Canines in the Courtyard on Feel Good Fridays, the series takes place the third Friday of each month through September. Well-behaved people and their dogs are invited to gather in the courtyard behind Paws to support a good cause. 48th Annual Drum Corps Associates World Championships—On Labor Day weekend 2012, Drum Corps Associates will hold its 48th Annual World Championship competitions at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. More than forty drum corps from throughout North America will be competing in the championships that are expected to attract 13-thousand performers and fans. The festivities kick off on Friday, August 31, with free Individual/Ensemble & Mini Corps performances. Saturday will feature Class A and Open Class Preliminaries. Sunday kicks off with an Alumni Spectacular at 10:00 a.m. The Class A and Open Class World Championship Finals begin at 5:00 p.m. Throughout the weekend, drum corps members will be practicing on thirty fields around Anne Arundel County. Junior Olympic Sailing Festival—Annapolis Yacht Club and Severn Sailing Association are teaming up to provide three days of sailing for Junior Olympics. The 2012 Junior Olympic Sailing Festival – Chesapeake Bay Open youth sailing regatta kicks off with Olympic-style opening ceremonies on July 5, when junior sailors will process across Spa Creek bridge to an opening ceremony featuring sailing legend Gary Jobson and other luminaries. Other highlights include clinics, community outreach, a youth-oriented “Olympic Village,” and three days of fun and competitive junior sailing. An estimated 250 sailors age 8-18 are expected to compete in several types of boats for all-day dinghy racing. The event is a double high point for the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) – as the Annapolis Yacht Club Junior Regatta (7/6); the Sandy McVickar/SSA Regatta (7/7); and the Hobie Youth North American Championships take place at the same time as the July 6-8 Junior Olympics. Silopanna Music Festival—The inaugural Silopanna Music Festival is scheduled to take place at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville on Saturday, August 11. Produced by Rams Head Promotions, the event is expected to include 20 bands performing music for all ages on three stages. Speak Truth to Power—BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport is displaying the acclaimed worldwide exhibit, Speak Truth to Power, in its International Terminal through May 31, 2012. The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights exhibition honors the courage of human rights defenders across the globe. Through a dramatic series of silver gelatin prints Pulitzer Prize winner photojournalist Eddie Adams depicts compelling portraits that expose a spectrum of human rights issues. Historic London Town and Gardens—In spring 2012, Historic London Town and Gardens in Edgewater opened its much awaited permanent museum exhibit, Discover London Town. History comes alive as visitors navigate 5,000 square feet of exhibit area spanning 13,000 (yes 13,000!) years of regional history. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts—In May 2012, Maryland Hall welcomed Jordan Hendrick as a new Artist-in-Residence. Aboard for a one-year term, Hendrick joined seven existing artists-in-residence: Ken Cosgrove, Ali Crosby, Lorraine Ellerson, Gary Jameson, Kat Kowalski, Emily Welsh, and Pat Worsham. Maryland Live! Casino—The first phase of the $500 million, 300,000 square foot world class casino is scheduled to open in June 2012. It will provide a host of dining options as well as 4,750 Las Vegas-style slot machines and electronic table games, including Blackjack, Roulette, Mini-Baccarat, and Pai Gow Poker. Nationally acclaimed restaurants including Bobby’s Burger Palace by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, the Cheesecake Factory, and Phillip’s Seafood Restaurant are slated to open with the completion of Phase 1. Federal House—Dining out with your dog at Federal House in Annapolis is more convenient than ever before. Harry Browne’s—The Annapolis landmark that has been serving patrons for more than 30 years is now a zero landfill restaurant. The dining establishment phased in its eco-friendly waste disposal efforts over a three-month period that ended in March 2012. Havana Banana Breads—Retired Army officer Mike Lawrence completed the relocation and expansion of his company from Ellicott City to 1981 Moreland Parkway in Annapolis in October 2011. Lemongrass—In February 2012, the City of Annapolis announced that Lemongrass had been certified for its sustainable practices under the new version of the City’s Certification Workbook for Food Handling Establishments. Under the new requirements, applicants must adopt and display their environmental policy and use carryout containers made from recyclable materials. Miss Shirley’s Café—Located at 1 Park Place in Annapolis, Miss Shirley’s opened in November 2011. It features Southern-inspired fare with a Maryland twist. Food Network Magazine has recognized the restaurant for having the “Best Breakfast Dish in Maryland.” Miss Shirley’s Café first opened in Roland Park in 2005. It was created in memory of Miss Shirley McDowell, a longtime cook at The Classic Catering People. Mission BBQ—Former Underarmour and Outback Steakhouse executives opened Mission BBQ at 7748 Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie in September 2011. SugarBuns in the Kitchen—Shortly after opening her restaurant at 137 Prince George Street in Annapolis in May 2011, owner Danie Connolly began lending umbrellas to tourists and locals who try to wait out sudden storms under her café’s extended roofline. Not wanting rain to keep customers from downtown Annapolis, Connolly lends them a SugarBuns umbrella. She asks only that they return it after they are finished exploring the city. If the restaurant is closed, borrowers can return the umbrellas to a designated place. WEST Kitchen & Tavern—A new dining hot spot is coming to Annapolis in mid-June 2012. WEST Kitchen & Tavern at Loews Annapolis Hotel will feature a hearth oven, fresh herb garden, plentiful raw bar, open expo kitchen, and chef’s table for group dining experiences. Flexible indoor and outdoor dining spaces will include private or communal as well as bar and lounge seating. Airport Shuttle—Booking the Airport Shuttle for transportation to Baltimore’s Penn Station, Washington’s Union Station, BWI’s Amtrak, Maryland Cruise Terminal, and Arundel Mills became even easier when the Airport Shuttle launched a new website in April 2012. Amtrak—During its 40th anniversary year in 2011, Amtrak carried nearly 30.2 million passengers. This is the highest ridership total since the National Railroad Passenger Corporation began operating in 1971. It is also the eighth ridership record Amtrak has enjoyed over the last nine years. Annapolis Boutique Spa and Salon—After seven years of operating the successful Annapolis Day Spa on West Street in Annapolis, owner Joan Courtney relocated her business to West Annapolis in February 2012. Anne Arundel County Harvest Guide—The Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corporation and Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District have created a Harvest Guide to help individuals identify sources for county products and services. In addition to identifying where individuals can purchase locally grown produce, meats, and other products, the guide also identifies restaurants that use local ingredients, farm services and agencies, and area farm supply and implement dealers. Anne Arundel County has 377 farms operating on more than 29,000 acres of land. The farms produce corn, barley, wheat, soybeans, and a variety of vegetables, fruits, and meats. Anne Arundel County Public Library—Play and Learn Stations will be coming to county libraries over the next few months. The first station has already been installed in the Brooklyn Park Public Library. PALS are self-contained educational computers that help kids ages two through eight prepare for school. The goal is to have two stations at each of the county’s 15 libraries. The AACPL has funding for nine stations, and it is seeking donations for 21 more. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport—During the first quarter of 2012, 4,932,590 commercial passengers flew through BWI Airport. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport—Charter flights to Cuba are expected to begin departing from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport in fall 2012. Island Travel & Tour is booking the flights that were originally slated to begin in March 2012. In Spring 2011, U.S. Customs and Border Protection gave BWI the go-ahead to provide the service to Cuba. Federal restrictions still prohibit U.S. citizens from traveling to Cuba as tourists, but flights are open to academics, journalists, religious institutions, cultural groups, and other organizations that can demonstrate legitimate purposes for a visit. 410-859-7111. www.bwiairport.com.
BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport—German air carrier Condor Airlines is scheduled to begin offering twice-weekly, seasonal service from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport to Frankfurt in July. The third-largest German airline will be the second European carrier flying out of BWI’s International Terminal. British Airways currently offers one daily flight to London from BWI Airport. Condor’s 270-seat Boeing 767s will fly from BWI on Mondays and Thursdays from July to October. BWI will be the sixth U.S. destination for Condor and its first in the mid-Atlantic region. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport—New improvements to BWI’s rooftop along with a few other eco-smart measures is expected to save the airport $2 million annually on energy costs. Hybrid Harbormaster Boats—In October 2011 Annapolis received the first of two cutting-edge propulsion systems that are designed to help save the Bay while saving the City money. Only a dozen of these hybrid diesel-electric-solar propulsion systems exist worldwide, and Annapolis was awarded grant money to purchase two of the twelve. Since January 2012, the propulsion system has been mounted on the boat the harbormaster uses to collect mooring fees and conduct water rescues as needed. The Moorings—In May 2012, The Moorings opened their newest charter destination in Annapolis. They offer bareboat sailing, power and skippered charters. Port of Baltimore—A record 251,889 people sailed aboard 105 cruises from the Port of Baltimore in 2011. The total exceeds the record set in 2010 when 210,549 individuals sailed on 90 cruises. The strong momentum is expected to continue through 2012 with 100 cruises scheduled. Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International offer year-round schedules from Baltimore. Cruises sail to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, and New England/Canada. Carnival signed a five-year extension in 2011 to continue offering year-round cruises from Baltimore. Royal Caribbean has committed to sailing from Baltimore through October 2013. State Highway Administration—Individuals who like to walk around Annapolis will be able to get around more easily thanks to a new project from the State Highway Administration. The SHA will be expanding sidewalks on West Street to bring them up to American with Disabilities standards. http://sha.md.gov.
Towne Park Parking Garages—Individuals who park in the City of Annapolis’s four downtown parking garages don’t need to have cash on hand to do so. Veteran’s Center—Since September 2011, the Annapolis Vet Center has been operating from a new location at 100 Annapolis Street, Suite 102, in West Annapolis. Large windows, bright colors, aromatherapy, and plants welcome visitors to the spacious new center that is twice the size of the former offices. Westfield Annapolis—Busy parents who wish to shop solo can take advantage of free childcare services at Westfield Annapolis. Launched in November 2011, Westfield Family KidCare is offered in the Pottery Barn Court next to PlayTown. Children ages three to nine are welcome with a maximum of 15 children at a time for up to two hours each. All spots are first-come first-served. Children activities include an iPad station, puppet shows, movie nights, and birthday clubs. Child care professionals are courtesy of KidsCourt LLC. City Dock—The Express has named Annapolis’s City Dock a Best of D.C. Life 2011 attraction. The Washington Post’s news, entertainment, arts, and lifestyle magazine wrote, “It’s rare to find a place where past and present coexist as peacefully as City Dock, the hub of Annapolis’s historic district.” Annapolis’s City Dock was in good company, ranking along with the National Gallery of Art, D.C.’s Newseum, and the Turkish Embassy.
Patuxent National Wildlife Visitors Center—Maryland Life Magazine included the Patuxent Wildlife Center in its Free State’s Finest list from across the state. The tally included results of a poll the magazine conducted in the fall of 2011. It asked readers to vote on their favorite things around Maryland in several categories. Rams Head on Stage—At the close of 2011, Pollstar ranked Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis the Number One Club in the World with 500 Seats or Less in its Top 100 Club Venues list. Rams Head on Stage ranked 24th in the nation overall. The performance venue sold 91,709 tickets in 2011, a five-percent increase over the 87,120 tickets sold in 2010. St. John’s College—The Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College in Annapolis has received the highest national recognition for a museum — accreditation from the American Association of Museums. Awarded in March 2012, the accreditation signifies that the Mitchell Gallery has met and/or exceeded the standards and best practices in the museum field. Of the nation’s estimated 17,500 museums, 779 are currently accredited. The Mitchell Gallery is one of only 15 museums accredited in Maryland. It has been part of the Annapolis community since 1989.

Annapolis Book Festival—The Annapolis Book Festival at the Key School celebrated its 10th anniversary in April 2012. This year’s festival featured 45 authors including nationally renowned authors Daniel H. Pink, Evan Thomas, Kathryn Erskine, Iris Krasnow, Bing West and Tupelo Hassman. Leukemia Cup—The Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will present its 20th annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Launch Party and Regatta on Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, at the Annapolis Yacht Club. St. John’s College—St. John’s College is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its “New Program” this year. The “New Program” is the school’s all-required curriculum that centers on reading and discussing the great works of Western civilization. While the “New Program” was instituted in 1937, St. John’s traces its origins to 1696, when it opened as King William’s School. What was then called a free school would today be called a grammar or prep school. King William’s School became St. John’s College in 1784 when St. John’s was chartered by the State of Maryland. For the next 150 years, the school had educational and financial highs and lows until the 1929 stock market crash threatened to close the college for good. In 1937, in an eleventh-hour effort to save St. John’s, the college’s board hired Stringfellow Barr and Scott Buchanan, two academics with revolutionary educational ideas, to completely revamp the curriculum, and the pair implemented the “New Program.” Seventy-five years later, the “New Program” still thrives, as does St. John’s College, known as one of the country’s most intellectual colleges. 410-263-2371. www.stjohnscollege.edu.
