The Maryland Distance Learning Association (MDLA) recognized the Bridge to Success (B2S) Project as the Distance Program of the Year at its annual meeting.
The project was chosen for its ability to improve students’ college readiness and math confidence and abilities through two open educational learning courses, “Learning to Learn” and “Succeed with Math.” Through June 2012, 12 institutions are piloting one or both of the courses, with over 777 students currently completing one or both courses.
The “Learning to Learn” course helps students discover their strengths, their learning styles and the skills they need to perform well at the college level.
Sybille Clayton and Heather Riordan, both assistant professors of mathematics at AACC, adapted the Open University’s “Starting with Maths” content into the “Succeed with Math” course material. The course offers examples of everyday situations in which math is used and provides students with the steps they need to understand and solve the problems. The course is self-paced, allowing students to spend more time on the gaps in their math background and move into college-level math courses.
Anyone who has access to an Internet connection can access the B2S website (http://b2s.aacc.edu) and link to the free and open course material and register with an email address. B2S content is currently being introduced in pilot programs throughout the United States. The course content can be used in a formal educational setting or be accessed on an individual basis. The content is free and open and is available to be used by any individual, organization, school or agency.
