Thanks to a grant from the Allstate Foundation, almost a dozen teens from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (BGCAA) were able to participate in a ten week workshop focused on creating safe driving Public Service Announcements for teens. The workshop, led by the team at Filmsters, Inc. was a unique approach of reaching teens.

“Teens writing and producing for teens” said Patty White, President of Filmsters, “is a great way of reaching teens since the producers and audience are peers”.

When writing the PSA’s the teens were encouraged to think about what their peers would relate to. Each participant in the workshop was encouraged to pitch an idea for a PSA, and then the group voted on the best two to take into production. Said Ms. White “this workshop encouraged teens to come up with creative ways to tell a story that would engage people, especially new drivers, to listen.”

Reginald Broddie, Chief Professional Officer of BGCAA said “our first priority is safety.” “We are proud that our teens have taken a stance in regards to promoting teen safe driving.”

The two final PSAs are “Life is Not a Game” which showcases how real life is not an action-packed video game, but has real and lasting implications. Sometimes deadly. The “Life is for Celebrating” PSA focuses on new drivers who don’t take driving seriously. The consequences effect not only the driver, but their family as well.
