A Different Tale Of Bullying

| May 23, 2012

NOTE: To the reader who mailed me an anonymous note regarding faculty bullying of students, can you please  contact me via e-mail. Create a gmail or hotmail account if necessary. I need to get more information.

This one is fictional. A 16 year old high school freshman from New York, Jessica Barba,  created an anti-bullying video and fake Facebook page as part of a project. The video is powerful. It tells the tale of a fictional girl, Hailey, who is bullied at school and online. She eventually does the unthinkable–she commits suicide.

However, the school determined that it was “disruptive” and suspended the teenager . The school spokesperson would not comment.

Bullying has taken center stage in education today. Unfortunately, too little is being done to control or eliminate it. We have highlighted a local teacher who asked Maryland’s First Lady how to handle administrators who prefer to downgrade incidents . We highlighted an ongoing 4-year bullying problem at Southern Middle and Southern High .

Coming up, we have another story from Annapolis High School, Arundel High School, and a Pasadena Elementary School.
