Vounteers Come Together To Support The Light House

Volunteers are the Light House shelter’s most treasured resource. With over 1,000 volunteers donating their time and talent, the Light House is able to provide the many services they offer.  The Light House shelter

The Annapolis group of Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) recently prepared dinner for the residents of the Light House shelter in Annapolis.  The residents enjoyed homemade soups, salad and bread with orange cheesecake chewies and peach bread pudding for dessert.

MOPS groups are chartered through local faith-based organizations and strive to meet the needs of every mom with children from birth through kindergarten. There are more than 3900 MOPS groups meeting across the United States and in 35 countries around the world. MOPS groups meet regularly to celebrate the joys of motherhood and to encourage each other through the challenges. Community outreach is an important part of the MOPS program.

Julie Millis, the Annapolis MOPS group leader explained that their MOPS group from the Evangeliscal Presbyterian Church of Annapolis enjoys serving at the Light House Shelter and interacting with the residents. As busy Mothers of Preschoolers, they want to teach their children the substance of what they believe and by serving even the most simple meal they know they are helping their neighbors.

The Light House recently had over 50 midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy’s 30th company volunteer for a massive spring clean up at 10 Hudson Street. The midshipmen deep-cleaned the kitchen and the cooler, organized the food pantry and completely cleaned the winter relief shelter on West Street and loaded trucks headed for the county dump. In addition, they worked in the garden at the shelter – digging up and replanted six trees, weeding, creating a ditch along the front of the shelter to improve drainage and moving 135 eight foot 6×6 timbers – one at a time – to build a 117 linear foot garden box.

According to Carol Ferdock, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator for the shelter, “these guys went to town. There was no standing around or complaining. The midshipmen came in and got it done. We are so appreciative.”
