Synopsis:

On April 15, 2012, at approximately 9:17 p.m., Corporal Kevin Mont, a 23-year veteran currently assigned to the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Special Services Bureau, initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on Route 665 near Riva Road. The violator’s vehicle came to a stop in the left travel lane with the officer’s marked patrol vehicle behind it with all of his emergency lights activated.

Corporal Mont exited his vehicle, made contact with the vehicle operator and instructed her to pull ahead onto the right shoulder out of the travel portion of the roadway. At that time, a White Toyota Celica slowed behind the police vehicle as the officer was walking back to his vehicle. According to witness statements, a 1999 Acura RL was traveling at a high rate of speed when it began skidding and struck the rear of the Celica. Corporal Mont immediately ran into the grass median to get out of the roadway. The Celica was then projected across the median, where it struck the officer and projected him into the opposing traffic lanes.

The Acura, which was redirected by the initial impact, struck a second vehicle in the right travel lane and then ultimately struck a guardrail. Three occupants of the Acura subsequently bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot into the woods. Two of the occupants were located a short time later by Southern District officers near the Regatta Bay community. Both occupants were released without charges. The driver of the vehicle remains at large and is currently being sought for numerous charges.

Corporal Mont was flown by Maryland State Police Medivac to the University of Maryland Hospital’s Shock Trauma Center, where he is in serious, but stable condition.
