Police Officer Shoots, Kills Man During Domestic Dispute Call

On April 13, 2012 at approximately 1751 hours, The Anne Arundel County Police Department received a 911 call reporting a domestic assault in the 800th block of Frost Valley Lane, Gambrills Anne Arundel County, Maryland.  Information was obtained that a female was inside a residence screaming for help.

A uniformed officer from the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Western District arrived at the residence short time later.  As the officer approached the residence, the officer could hear a female screaming from within.  The officer was able to make entry into the residence, at which time; the officer encountered an individual, later identified as Gary Petrie.  A physical altercation occurred between the officer and Gary Petrie.  During the altercation the officer, who was in fear for his life, discharged his/her departmental issued handgun striking Gary Petrie in the upper body.  Gary Petrie was subsequently transported to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center where he died as a result of his injuries.  The female from the residence was taken to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center, with non life threatening injuries, as a result of the domestic result.

The officer has been identified as a four year veteran of the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Western District.  The Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is currently investigating the incident.
