Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Project Clean Stream, Sat., Apr. 14, 2012
Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is an established conservation, non-profit organization whose mission is to restore the Chesapeake Bay through collaborative engagement with all the communities that work and live in the Bay area. Periodically there are volunteer opportunities associated with office work in Annapolis and events in the area. - · 9:00 am, Sat., Apr. 14, 2012, Project Clean Stream: On April 14th, rain or shine, Project Clean Stream will aid in the restoration effort of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed, thousands of people will be participating in this annual trash cleanup event coordinated by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and our partners. Come out to one of hundreds of cleanup sites and beautify the neighborhoods where you live and work. Annapolis Light House Shelter
This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed serve the shelter and its clients with specialized skills such as accounting, medicine, law, and carpentry. The hours are flexible for many tasks and training is provided. In addition to volunteers, the shelter has an immediate need for pantry food items because of a greatly increased demand for lunches. Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Emergency Exercise, May 9, 2012
The Department needs a number of volunteers to play different roles in association with a Point of Distribution emergency exercise from 8:00 AM–12:30 PM, Wed., May 9, 2012. The exercise will be held in Annapolis and breakfast and lunch will be provided. Healthy Markets, Benefit LLC
Healthy Markets, a Benefit LLC, will be operating a Farmer’s Market from May- November at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie and needs volunteers to help vendors set up their tents and equipment at the beginning of the market, and break down their tents and equipment at the end of the market day. There may be additional opportunity for a volunteer manager to help manage the market as well or assist with the kid’s tent. Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G) Project
Thousands of books gather dust in storage rooms and attics, while thousands of students and adults in developing countries lack both textbooks and recreational reading. Volunteers drop off good used books and/or help sort 8:00 am–12:00 noon on the second and fourth Saturdays each mon. (volunteers should call to verify) at the B.I.G. warehouse at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. Individuals of high school age and older are welcome to help on a “drop-in” basis. Select volunteers are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. Contact Joyce at 703-919-0069 to help get books ready for a B.I.G. Sale. Friends of Quiet Waters Park
The non-profit organization supports the operation of the park and the events that take place there. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed throughout the year for a variety of tasks to support events such as Earth Day in April, Summer Concert Series from Jun.–Sept., Howl-O-Ween Bark ‘n Bash in late Oct., and the Arts Festival held in the fall each year. There is a current need for volunteers to help with interpretive programs at the Park. Programs last an hour and are provided to the public on a weekly or bi-weekly basis; there are a variety of themes ranging from amphibians to wetland demonstrations, and no special skills or degrees are required There may be training provided depending on the topic matter, and volunteers can work with park staff to lead and co-lead thematic interpretive programs.. GreenScape, Spring 2012, Sat., April 21, 2012
The Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department has announced Spring GreenScape 2012 to take place on April 21, 2012. GreenScape is a volunteer effort, sponsored by the City of Annapolis through many of its departments, which encourages and supports individuals and organizations to plant and maintain native gardens in public areas throughout the City. The City provides plant materials, mulch, trash bags and gloves; and the community provides volunteers who want to make a difference in their community. This is the 21st year of this annual program of beautification, clean-up and planting in public spaces throughout the City of Annapolis by volunteers. YWCA Sexual Assault Crisis Center
Sexual Assault Volunteers: Crisis Intervention Counselors/Volunteer Advocatesare needed to assist victims of sexual assault. Volunteers answer the 24-hour hotline from home and/or provide hospital accompaniment to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence; flexible hours are available (24 hrs/day). Minimum age requirement is 18. There is a need for volunteers to provide hospital accompaniment to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
