St. John’s College Wine Event: In Vino Veritas

The Friends of St. John’s College, in conjunction with Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits, welcome the community to the wine event and fundraiser, “In Vino Veritas,” featuring tastings, a panel discussion, and workshops. Former St. John’s tutor, Abe Schoener, of Scholium Project wines, opens the event with a discussion on becoming a winemaker and the wines he has produced. Workshops feature sommelier and wine educator Jay Youmans, who discusses how to taste and describe wine, and cheese connoisseur Phil Altherr. In addition, local chef Jerry Pelligrino presents a cooking demonstration and suggests wines to accompany the meal. There will also be a raffle drawing to win a trip for two to Napa Valley. Wine samples, served with a selection of appetizing hors d’oeuvres, will be available throughout the day.

The event will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at St. John’s College on March 24 from 1:30 to 6 p.m.

Tickets are $35 for general admission; $25 for each workshop; $50 for raffle tickets.

Schedule of Events

1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Panel Discussion. Former St. John’s tutor Abe Schoener, the force behind Scholium Project wines, will lead a discussion with experts on the art and science of wine, and the journey to becoming a winemaker.

2 to 6 p.m. Tasting. Sample a broad selection of wines from around the world hand selected for their quality and unique characteristics, served with an array of appetizing horsd’oeuvres.

2:15 to 3 p.m. Cooking Demonstration. Jerry Pelligrino, former executive chef and owner of Corks(Federal Hill) and the new Waterfront Kitchen (Fells Point) in Baltimore, and co-host of WYPR 88.1 FM “Radio Kitchen” will demonstrate the preparation of a meal and suggest wines to accompany it.

3:15 to 4 p.m. Wine and Cheese Pairings. “Curd Nerd” Phil Altherr of Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits, trained in the “Master of Cheese for Professionals” program at the Artisanal Cheese Center in New York City, will discuss how to shop and care for, as well as serve fine cheeses with wines that best complement them. There will be ample samples.

4:15 to 5 p.m. Scholium Project Wines. Called a renegade vintner, Abe Schoener, former St. John’s tutor and assistant dean, will discuss his unorthodox approaches to wine making. Participants will sample Scholium Project wines.

5:05 p.m. Raffle Drawing. Register to win a trip for two to Napa Valley.

5:15 to 6 p.m. Tasting and Describing Wine Like a Pro. How do wine professionals judge and describe wine? What do they look for and why? You will learn the basic approach used by most importers, retailers, restaurateurs, writers, and producers. Join Jay Youmans, advanced level sommelier, certified wine educator, and Washington, D.C.’s only master of wine, as he tastes and discusses five wines.
