Special Needs Walk Run

The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues encourages the public to sign up for the 3rd annual Recreation Deeds for Special Needs 2012 Challenge Run 5K and Fun Walk to be held Saturday, March 31, at Fort Smallwood Park, 9500 Fort Smallwood Road, Pasadena. The race this year is being held in memory of Tyler Hamrick.

“Tyler and his parents, Terri and John Hamrick, were instrumental in bringing Challenger Baseball, an adaptive sports program, to Recreation and Parks,” says Wendy Scarborough, adaptive sports coordinator.  “After a courageous battle for life, Tyler passed away last June. In his memory we are dedicating this race to him and in honor of all adaptive athletes.”

Challenger Baseball was originally part of the Marley Little League and several years ago Terri and the group contacted Recreation and Parks for assistance in continuing the program. This program is held at the new Adaptive Baseball field at Lake Waterford Park in Pasadena.

The 5K course is a combination of paved roadways and trails through the park and along the Chesapeake Bay. The one mile fun walk is completely within the park on paved roads and is a great venue for participants of all abilities.

Registration fees are $20 for adults age 18 and up, $15 for youth under age 18, and $15 per person for groups of five or more participants. The fun walk is $10 for all ages. Pre-registered runners will be guaranteed a race t-shirt. Shirts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for participants registering on race day. Race day registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m.

Volunteers also are needed to cheer on the runners and walkers as well as assist with the race, Ms. Scarborough says. “If you want to come out and support the group but are not interested in walking or running, your help is needed. Community Service hours are available for youth.”<

For race and volunteer information, contact Carolyn Ryan at 410-222-7313, Ext. 3555, or e-mail her at [email protected]
or see www.aacounty.org/RecParks. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund to help pay for athletes to participate in adaptive sports programs and summer day camp opportunities for youth with special needs.
