City Receives Grant For Stanton Community Center

Annapolis Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announced that the City received grant money totaling more than $100,000.

The money is from separate grants including an $80,000 Community Legacy grant and a $22,000 Technical Assistant grant, both from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The City also received a $10,000 “Ladders to Success” grant from the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.

The money will be used for improvements to the Stanton Center and funding the Reading and Math division of the After School Homework Club.

“During tough economic times, grants like these are a boon for programs that serve our vulnerable county residents,” Mayor Cohen said. “I applaud Recreation Manager Archie Trader and his staff for going after the “Ladders to Success” grant, along with Planning and Zoning’s Theresa Wellman who worked on the Community Legacy and Technical Assistant grants. These three grants will help our youth succeed by providing critical study support and structural rehabilitation dollars to maintain a supportive and safe environment for learning and playing.”

The Community Legacy and Technical Assistant grants will assist with the Stanton Center Facility Rehabilitation Project and will include repair work on the windows and roof to address water infiltration problems in the building. Masonry work will also be included in the project scope.

“The Stanton Center exemplifies the purpose of the State’s revitalization programs — to renew existing communities by partnering with local leaders to bring back to life those places that are of high historical and cultural importance to the community,” DHCD Division of Neighborhood Revitalization Assistant Secretary Carol A. Gilbert said.

The “Ladders to Success” grant will cover the expenses for the Reading and Math division of the After School Homework Club.  This is an Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department program at the Stanton Center and will use the Smart Board and computer software which was acquired with a 2008, $15,000 AT&T Corporate Contributions Grant.

The After School Homework Club program provides homework assistance coupled with reading and math support for the more than 35 neighborhood students who attend the Stanton Center every day.

“The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County recognized Deede Rivers in 2010 as our Volunteer of the Year for her work with the Stanton Center’s After School Homework Club, and we have been watching the program’s evolution ever since,” Executive Director Bess Langbein said. “We are very excited to play a role in bringing a new element to the program through the Smart Board instruction in Math and Reading, which will parallel in-school teaching techniques to reinforce student learning and success.  We look forward to being a partner with the Stanton Center and its after-school programs.”
