A Conversation With Shirley Phelps-Roper

As we all have heard, members of the Westboro Baptist Church will be picketing Glen Burnie High School next Tuesday at 2:00pm.  When they were here last year, Meade High School was targeted because they reportedly had a large number of gay students.

At some point, Margie Phelps and Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughters of the Westboro Baptist Church founder/pastor, Fred Phelps, began following our Twitter feed. So we engaged them to see why Glen Burnie was selected.

We did not receive an answer from Margie, but Shirley Phelps-Roper responded.

We asked if she could share some of the emails she had received and received the following replies:

The reference was towards Jeffrey Sears, the teacher and coach at Glen Burnie High who was arrested in December for sexual abuse of minors. Sears is currently out on bail with a trial date scheduled for April.

In an effort to see what makes this group tick, we asked if they would meet with us.

Phelps-Roper has responded and agreed to allow us to interview her. We are trying to work out the details.

We are not sure how much time we will have or where we will conduct the interview, but want your input. What question(s) would you like to see answered? Please leave your response in a comment.  Also, please remember, they have a constitutional right to protest. Please keep the questions as polite as possible. Hard hitting and controversial is fine. Vulgarity is not.

Please stay tuned to Eye On Annapolis for any further updates. We will be covering the protest and the planned counter protest on Tuesday and will be tweeting the event. Please follow us.
