Another Dog Baiting Case Surfaces In Anne Arundel

On March 3, 2012, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a citizen brought a female Pit Bull Terrier with severe wounds to Anne Arundel County Animal Control in Millersville.

According to the citizen, the dog was discovered on March 2, 2012, on Ritchie Highway near 11th Avenue in Brooklyn Park and brought to Animal Control the next morning. This location is less than five miles from the location where “Rocky Road”, a Pit Bull with dog fighting injuries, was discovered on February 2, 2012. After her arrival at Animal Control, staff quickly determined her condition was severe including scars, numerous bite wounds and a gaping wound under her front arm pit. Due to the severity of her wounds, and her apparently good temperament despite her physical condition, Animal Control immediately contacted Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital to seek treatment. Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital generously offered to care for “Princess” the same way they have been treating and caring for the other recent suspected bait dog, “Rocky Road”.

At this time, “Rocky Road” is making huge strides on his journey to recovery and it is anticipated that he will be released to Tara’s House rescue soon. “Princess” will remain at WCAH during her treatment and will be released to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County once she is ready. Animal Control in coordination with the Anne Arundel County Police Department continues to investigate the case of “Rocky Road” and the most recent case of “Princess”. Animal Control and the Police Department request that citizens, veterinarians and other agencies within the county be on the look out for suspicious activity including, but not limited to, high numbers of dogs, particularly dominant breed dogs, being kept in one location, a high volume of people coming and going from a particular area and injured dogs, who appear to have been involved in a fight.

In an effort to assist Animal Control and the Anne Arundel County Police Department in obtaining information to help in identify and convict the person or persons responsible for the condition of Rocky Road, the Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward. HSUS is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for abandoning the aforementioned animals. The reward for information could double if it is determined that the dogs sustained fighting injuries and if charges lead to a dog fighting conviction.

Animal Control is actively seeking assistance from area veterinary hospitals that may be able to offer Pro bono or reduced costs services to animals arriving at Animal Control that the shelter would typically be unable to provide the necessary care or services. Veterinarians participating in an In-Kind Services Program to provide veterinary care to animals that require extensive services in emergency situations are being sought by the shelter. Parties interested in helping to support the care of “Princess” or other animals from Anne Arundel County Animal Control can make donations to Waugh Chapel’s account for animals, including “Princess”, from Animal Control, the Casper Fund through Animal Control or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County in support of any care she will need after her release. Anyone interested in helping can contact Animal Control at 410-222-8900.
