Social Media Posts Cause Concern For Chesapeake High School

A whirlwind of social media postings have caused a headache for the administrators and concern for parents at Chesapeake High School in Pasadena.

Late last week, a student died unexpectedly and a firestorm quickly erupted on Facebook after a comment was made by an african-American that there was “one less redneck” to worry about. Through Facebook, and their students, parents began to hear rumors of a “race war” about to ensue in the school community.

Both the police and the school administration have denied any plausible threat; however, they have stepped up security and administration considerably.

Many parents called the school today out of concern for the safety of their children and were assured that it was a normal school day.

The school posted two letters which were reportedly sent home with students on their website today. The first letter (dated yesterday) notified the community of the death of a student. The second letter (dated today) explains the increased police presence.

But parents expressed their outrage at the lack of notification. One parent posted on Facebook that she was outraged that the school seems to contact parents via automated telephone messages for seemingly insignificant things; yet when a serious safety concern is present, there is no communication.

Tensions continue to run high and according to the letter sent home today, there is information that the school is unable to share; but they do assure parents that there is no verifiable threat and that they are doing all they can to maintain a safe and nurturing environment for the students.
