Piney Orchard Elementary School in Odenton is one of seven schools across Maryland that was  recognized for its outstanding delivery of instruction to gifted and talented students this week.

The school received the Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) award and was recognized during a state Department of Education reception in Laurel this week. Piney Orchard is the first county school to earn the distinction, and was one of the first in the county to fully implement the Advanced Learner Programs for students in grades 3 through 5.
“As we continue to emphasize rigor for all students, it is essential that we focus on developing high quality gifted and talented education programs,” Interim State Superintendent Dr. Bernard Sadusky said.
Piney Orchard Elementary’s application successfully demonstrated its approach to challenging advanced students with curriculum specifically designed for gifted and talented students on a daily basis. The school also is increasing access to opportunities for advanced instruction to all students in all subject areas, and implementing the MSDE Primary Talent Development Program in kindergarten through second grade.
The school will receive a banner and plaque acknowledging its status as an Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education school. In addition, representatives from the school will receive citations from the Governor’s Office and the Maryland State Department of Education.
