Leopold Issues Statement On Indictment

UPDATE:  District 6 County Councilman, Chris Trumbauer has issued the following statement to Eye On Annapolis regarding the Leopold Indictment:

I am saddened by the news that our County Executive has been indicted today. He is entitled to a fair hearing and due process under the law. However, should these allegations prove to be true, it will be yet another example of someone in power betraying the public’s trust. I have very little tolerance for scandal and corruption in public office.

Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold just released the following prepared statement:

I was disheartened to learn today that the State Prosecutor lodged charges against me for allegations of misconduct in office.

I have not yet seen the allegations. However, I realize that this matter and all questions related to the scurrilous and salacious accusations, must be addressed and resolved through the judicial process. In a court of law, all sides have the opportunity to present evidence and argument, as opposed to the grand jury process which can be manipulated and controlled solely by the State Prosecutor.

While it is inappropriate for me to publicly comment on the allegations, the citizens of Anne Arundel County can look to my decades long history of valued public service to assure themselves and have confidence in the fact that I have always placed their interests above all
else.

I would ask my fellow citizens to reserve judgment until all of the evidence can be marshaled and presented, and that they be patient as the judicial process takes its course.

To the extent that any additional comment can be properly made, I have directed your inquiries to my counsel, Bruce L. Marcus of Greenbelt, Maryland.
