Midshipman Action Group Projects

United States Naval Academy Coat of Arms.

The midshipmen members of the Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) will participate in numerous local volunteer and community service programs throughout the upcoming spring semester.  During the previous academic year, they logged 20,000 hours participating in community service projects, and in this semester alone will participate in six different local projects as well as multiple projects elsewhere during spring break.
MAG midshipmen will volunteer in the following notable community projects this spring:

  • April 21 – Save the Bay:  This annual effort is held in honor of Earth Day; last year, volunteers, including over thirty MAG midshipmen, were able to complete a clean-up blitz of the 108 acre park at the Waterford Park in Pasadena, Md. Throughout the morning volunteers worked on both beautifying the park and protecting the Chesapeake Bay through planting, spreading, raking, clearing, and cleaning.
  • April 21 & 22 – Maryland Special Olympics: This two-day competition is held on the Naval Academy grounds every spring. The first day of competition is devoted to aquatics while the second day is devoted to track and field. Last year, over 3300 volunteer hours were dedicated to this weekend event while Special Olympians earned qualifying times to go on to the next level of competition. Thanks to the Annapolis Jaycees and other community participants, the Special Olympics has been a great success every year.
  • April 28 – Greenbury Point Cleanup: Also to honor Earth Day, the Midshipmen Action Group is working alongside the Naval Academy’s Department of Public Works Environmental Division to do a clean-up at Greenbury Point. The date of the event will be April 28th. Again this year, the midshipmen will be out in force to contribute to this event.
  • Mids for Kids: One of MAG’s most enduring programs, Mids for Kids reaches out to local schools in the Greater-Annapolis community to provide mentoring and tutoring. Midshipmen who participate in the program dedicate two free periods of their own liberty time to local community children offering encouragement and academic help. Ms. Teresa Tudor, from Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent’s office is the academy’s conduit to all school principals regarding the outreach program.
  • Honor Flight Program: The Honor Flight Program is a popular MAG program in which midshipmen greet World War II veterans who are visiting the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. This program focuses on paying tribute to the service of great Americans who fought In World War II. Midshipman 2nd Class Matt Disher, from Annapolis, has distinguished himself this past semester by leading this program which brought over a thousand volunteer hours from the Naval Academy’s student body to the veterans of World War II.
  • Spring Break Service Trip: This year, the Midshipmen Action Group is sending ten midshipmen-volunteers to Joplin, Missouri, March 10-17, to help with the reconstruction of the weather-devastated area. Midshipman 1st class, Stephanie Migut will be leading this spring break group of midshipmen in its effort to help the community in Joplin.

Established in 1992 as a community relations program organized and maintained by the Brigade of Midshipmen, MAG currently offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects.  Coordinated with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners. Last year, MAG participated in about 20,000 hours of community service.  MAG prepares midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
