Fatal Crash Closes Route 3 South In Gambrills

UPDATE: Anne Arundel County Police have released the following preliminary report on this morning’s accident.

On February 16, 2012, at approximately 2:13 a.m., officers from the Western District responded to Crain Highway south (Route 3) near Waugh Chapel Way for a report of a motor vehicle collision.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered that a Ford Explorer struck the rear of a box trailer being pulled by a Freightliner Tractor, resulting in the Ford Explorer subsequently catching fire. After the fire was extinguished, the operator of the Explorer was pronounced dead at the scene by Fire Department personnel. Investigators from the Traffic Safety Section were called to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The Investigation revealed that a 2002 Ford Explorer was traveling south on Route 3 in lane #3 (right lane) when it came up behind a slower moving vehicle. The Explorer moved to lane #2 (center lane), where the driver lost control of the vehicle, moved to lane #1 (left lane), eventually sliding back across all three southbound lanes of Route 3 into the right turn lane.

At that time, the Explorer struck the rear of a 1999 Stoughton box trailer being pulled by a 2012 Freightliner Tractor. The Explorer caught fire as a result of the crash with the driver still in the vehicle. A rear seat passenger exited the vehicle and remained at the scene while two unknown male passengers exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot for unknown reasons. The rear seat passenger was later treated and released for non-life threatening injuries at Shock Trauma. The driver and passenger of the Freightliner Tractor were not injured. Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and driver error are possible contributory factors in the collision.
