Anne Arundel County Dept. of Recreation and Parks

Youth Conservation Corps (YOUTH CORPS) 2012 Program: Recreation & Parks is announcing a NEW Youth Conservation Corps volunteer program at Lake Waterford Park, Pasadena. Youth completing grade 8 June 2012 up to the age of 16 are welcome to apply. The program will be held daily from 9 am–3 pm for two 2-week sessions during the month of July. Volunteer experience will include park conservation and clean up at Lake Waterford Park as well as at other county facilities. Applications are now being accepted. Interviews and enrollment will start February 1, 2012. This is a first come first serve program with a maximum number of participants. Final deadline for application is May 4, 2012. Bay Community Support Services (Formerly United Cerebral Palsy of So. Maryland)

Bay Community Support Services provides services and opportunities to children and adults with disabilities in Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including; placing and picking up donation canisters, special event assistance, office assistant, board of directors & committee members, companionship, assisting with recreational/crafts activities, handyman, gardening/yard work, and more. Flex Volunteer Project

9am –noon, Saturday, January 28, 2012: Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) is looking for a small group of volunteers to help with the preparation of small shipments of used books such as those provided to members of the armed forces and the Peace Corps. Project Linus- Anne Arundel County

The mission of this nonprofit organization is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly made by volunteer “blanketeers.” Volunteer “Blanketeers” of all ages are needed to sew, quilt, knit or crochet washable and child friendly new blankets for such children, up to age 18. This is a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups, as well as an opportunity to socialize as you complete these blankets, much like an old-fashioned quilting bee, but with a modern flair.   • ·         Third Saturday of every month (Except for Jun.–Aug.) from 10 am–12 noon: Join other “Blanketeers” at the Community Center in Severna Park working on projects that could use an extra set of hands to complete, such as cutting, matching fabric, sewing, pressing, tying knots, embroidery, or quilting to name a few. Volunteers can be as young as 8, but a parent must accompany if younger than 14.

 

Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble

Footworks is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to operate and manage a full-time professional troupe that performs and teaches multi-cultural percussive dance with live acoustic music for theaters, arts festivals, schools, and community events. There is an immediate need for website assistance for migrating the existing website to a new Content Management System. Volunteers help is also needed to help with fundraising, public relations, organization and board of directors development. A volunteer with graphic design experience is also needed to assist in creating promotional pieces for new production. Friends of Quiet Waters Park:

Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis is seeking volunteers who can lead and assist in Interpretive Nature Programs. No special skills or degrees required, just a willingness to learn! Maryland State Archives

Learn about Maryland history and the treasures preserved at the State Archives in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 years of age and older, are needed Monday through Saturday, between 8:30 – 10:00 am and/or 3:00 – 4:30 pm to assist in access and understanding of the records of the State of Maryland. Volunteers scan, index or keyboard many historic records, assist patrons with genealogy, research 19th century African-American records, and colonial records. Training is provided. Providence Center

Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults.  There are immediate openings for volunteers, including mature high school students, in: 1) Arnold as Pottery & Horticultural Assistants, Activity Center & Baldwin Industries Woodworking Aides, and Friendly Visitors; 2) Millersville as Activity Center & Arts Class Aides, Crafts, Woodshop, & Pottery Assistants; and 3) Pasadena as Senior Program Assistant. South River Federation

This non-profit, membership organization includes individuals and civic and community associations dedicated to restoring, protecting, and preserving the South River Watershed. Volunteers are needed throughout the year for everything from oyster restoration projects to stream cleanups to event support! South River High School (Mock Interviews)

Through mock interviews and preparatory lessons on interview skills and resume writing, SRHS students will be able to gain valuable first-hand knowledge on how to prepare for an interview, proper interview etiquette, and how to interact with a prospective employer.  In preparation for Mock Interviews and Career/College development, SRHS will have a Career Education Advisory for the Eleventh Grade on February 1, 2012 at 7:30 am.  The Eleventh Grade Advisory will include a presentation by a member of the Business Advisory Board, Community and/or Local Business Partner. The advisory will include information on interview techniques and soft skills, and SRHS is looking for volunteers to participate as Guest Speakers during this Eleventh Grade Advisor. In addition, we are seeking volunteers, such as local employers, to conduct 15-minute mock interviews and 5-minute interview review sessions with SRHS students. Mock Interviews will be held February 9, 10, 14, and 15, 2012 from 7:17 am to 2:05 pm, by class period. We will provide all volunteer interviewers with suggested interview questions, evaluation forms and any other necessary materials.
