Crofton Meadows Named Blue Ribbon School

Crofton Meadows Elementary School became the county’s 15th Maryland Blue Ribbon School of Excellence last week when it was announced as one of six schools to receive the prestigious honor at a ceremony at the Maryland State Department of Education in Baltimore.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Board President Patricia Nalley, and Regional Assistant Superintendent Dr. Monique Davis joined Crofton Meadows Principal Derek Burns and former principal Janine Robinson along with several school staff members for the announcement last week.

The other schools to receive blue ribbons are Woodholme Elementary School in Baltimore County, Ring Factory Elementary School in Harford County, Rachel Carson Elementary School in Montgomery County, Whitehall Elementary School in Prince George’s County, and Pocomoke Elementary School in Worcester County.

“This is a great school with great community involvement, and this award is proof of the tremendous things we can do together,” said Burns, who is in his first year as principal. “As the newcomer here, I am the beneficiary of a collaborative effort that is simply second to none.”

Robinson, who now works in the school system’s Office of Continuous School Improvement, called the award a crowning moment. “I have such great memories of my time at Crofton Meadows,” she said. “The school and its community deserve every accolade they receive because they work so hard together to achieve great things for children.”

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors schools that excel or significantly improve in reading and math exams as measured by state assessments. In order to achieve Blue Ribbon status, schools must meet standards established by the Maryland and U.S. departments of education.

Crofton Meadows is the 10 th county elementary school to earn the award, and the second in the South River feeder system. It is the sixth time in the last eight years and 10th time since 2000- 2001 that the county has had a Blue Ribbon School.

Crofton Meadows is now eligible to become a National Blue Ribbon School, a feat accomplished by 11 other county schools. Severna Park High School was the most recent National Blue Ribbon winner in 2011.
