Annapolis Area Christian School Superintendent Resigns Amid Scandal

The Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) Board of Directors today announces the retirement of Superintendent George  J.W. Lawrence, Jr., and the immediate implementation of a transition leadership team comprised of the principals of its three schools and the school’s business manager.

The announcement was made by Michael Edmonds, president of the AACS Board of Directors, who said: “The board and former Superintendent Lawrence are in agreement that the interests of our students, parents, faculty and staff cannot be best served by the distraction of his on-site presence in light of the lawsuit filed on December 27, 2011, and therefore he is immediately retiring. Last summer the Board initiated a nationwide search for a new Superintendent when we learned that the former Superintendent would be retiring at the completion of his three-year contractual agreement with AACS at the end of this school year.”

The lawsuit, filed by three former AACS employees in the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, alleges sex discrimination and retaliation by the former AACS Superintendent.

“AACS generally denies the allegations as contained in the complaint and we are highly confident that  AACS will be cleared of any wrongdoing once all of the facts of this matter are brought to light.  Unfortunately, due to the ongoing legal nature of this matter, we will not be commenting any further at this time. It is important to note that we are committed to providing each student with an education of excellence and today’s announcement allows us to continue with our important mission,” Edmonds said.

As part of the retirement announcement, the former Superintendent provided the following statement: “When you all honored me by appointing me Superintendent, I saw Annapolis Area Christian School as a school with a great deal of unrealized potential.  The school is moving forward.  It is realizing its potential.  It was a privilege to be used by the Lord to help foster that work.”

The members of the AACS transition leadership team include Jane Brown, principal of the Upper School; Rick Slenk, principal of the Middle School; Nancy Pavlischek, principal of the Lower School; and Glen Cole,  business manager.

According to Edmonds, the school initiated a nationwide search for a new superintendent during the summer of 2011 when it retained SIMA International, a 50-year-old firm specializing in working with faith-based nonprofit organizations. “This search was undertaken when the Board, together with former Superintendent Lawrence, decided that when his three-year contractual agreement with AACS was completed at the end of this June, he would be retiring.”
