Senior Centers: Black History Month Events

Anne Arundel County senior activity centers have scheduled various activities in February in recognition of Black History Month. The events are open to the public.

Annapolis

• The Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis, has a van trip at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 9 to the Pascal Senior Activity Center in Glen Burnie for a presentation at 12:30 p.m. by Bill Grimmette as W.E.B. Dubois. A master storyteller and historic character impersonator, Mr. Grimmette will offer a living history portrayal of Dubois, a scholar and political activist. His work interpreted the role of blacks in the critical period from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement. A lunch is available for those for register in advance. Trip signups begin Feb. 1. • The Annapolis Senior Activity Center will present R&B and Blues with DJ Larry Johnson at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis. For information, call 410-222-1818.

• Take a van trip to the Banneker Douglass Museum at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 22 from the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis. Take a tour of current exhibits including “recycle art” by local artist Loring Cornish, “Faces of Ghana” photo exhibit by J.L. Baker, and “Deep Roots, Waters Rising” exhibit showcasing African-American history in Maryland. Sign up at the Annapolis Center by Feb. 16.

• The Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis, will celebrate Leap Year and the center’s African-American heritage with the Bates Jazz Band, of which many members are Bates alumni, at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 29. Arnold

• The Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road, Arnold, will present the film “Ray” from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 16. In this film, Oscar Award-winner Jamie Foxx portrays rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles, who rose from obscurity to become world-famous despite losing his eyesight at age 6, a hardscrabble upbringing, repeated struggles with racism, romantic letdowns, and his own heroin abuse. Brooklyn Park

• Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center, 202 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, will present a program on Nigerian food, “moi-moi,” a high protein bean food prepared by Patience Menakaya, originally from Nigeria, and now from Anne Arundel County. O’Malley in Odenton

• The O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton, will present comedian “Platinum” to perform at 11 a.m. Feb. 21. She has been featured in regional and various other periodicals. Call 410-222-6227 for information.

Pasadena

• The Pasadena Senior Activity Center, 4103 Mountain Road, Pasadena, will present the Baltimore African-American Heritage Presentation at 10 a.m. Feb. 15. Wayne Schaumburg will commemorate Black History Month with the slide show and lecture on the rich African-American history in the City of Baltimore. Register by Feb. 8. • Members of the Pasadena Senior Activity Center, 4102 Mountain Road, Pasadena, will take a van trip on Feb. 9 at 10:45 a.m. to the Pascal Senior Activity Center in Glen Burnie for the presentation by Bill Grimmette as W.E.B. Pascal in Glen Burnie

• The South County Senior Activity Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater, will present the movie, “The Help,” at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 during Black History Month observations in February. For information, call 410-222-1927.

• The South County Senior Activity Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater, will take a van trip at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 9 to the Pascal Senior Activity Center in Glen Burnie for a performance by master storyteller and historic character impersonator Bill Grimmette.
