Beginning Jan. 23 appointments will be scheduled for income tax preparation by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) at six county senior activity centers. The tax preparation assistance with trained tax volunteers runs from Feb. 1 until April 6.

Volunteers have been trained by the Internal Revenue Service and the Maryland Comptroller’s Office. They can help only with simple 2011 income tax returns, which will be filed electronically. Volunteers cannot do tax returns involving partnerships or corporations, self-employed persons, or rental properties. This year’s adjusted gross income limit for those receiving assistance is $50,000. Also the guidelines call for doing only the Business EZ form and returns with no more than five stock transactions.

Appointments are required. For information, call the Annapolis Senior Center at 410-222-1818, Brooklyn Park Senior Center at 410-222-6847, O’Malley Senior Center in Odenton at 410-222-6227, Pasadena Senior Center at 410-222-0030, Pascal Senior Center in Glen Burnie at 410-222-6680, or South County Senior Center in Edgewater at 410-222-1927.

VITA is part of the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities. Please call 410-222-4464 or see www.aacounty.org/aging for information on the department and its programs for seniors and adults with disabilities.
