Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recruits volunteers ages 55+ to serve in various programs or projects that provide services to seniors and those with disabilities. The RSVP Advisory Council is a group of about a dozen members which meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Severna Park United Methodist Church providing advice to the RSVP Program. Functions of the Advisory Council include assisting in assessing community needs, trends affecting seniors and the disabled, volunteer recruitment strategies, fundraising, community outreach activities, project accomplishments and impact, and more. Anne Arundel County Public Schools AVID Tutoring Program
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutoring Program supports students in grades 6 through 12 who are in the academic middle. AVID tutors, age 18 and older, will be trained to work with small groups of students during the AVID elective class. These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models. Tutors would commit to at least one semester of tutoring at one of the AVID sites for a minimum of one hour per week, during the regular school day. - · Volunteers are also needed to work with high school AVID students who are partnering with Junior Achievement. JA Worldwide is a partnership between the business community, educators and volunteers — all working together to inspire young people to dream big and reach their potential. JA’s hands-on, experiential programs teach the key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to young people all over the world. Junior Achievement provides the training, curriculum, and a classroom ready to meet you. Anyone interested in volunteering will need to commit to a 2 ½ hour training session where volunteers will become familiar with the program and their role. Volunteers will also need to schedule 7 or 8 dates with the AVID teacher for approximately 45-60 minutes each session in order to conduct the lessons. Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation & Parks
The Department of Recreation and Parks has announced adaptive sports and social activities programs at Ruth P. Eason Special School in Millersville and Central Special School in Edgewater on Pages 26– 27 of their Fall/Winter Program Guide. Volunteers and parents needed to assist with the programs, and background checks are required for all volunteers. Contact the Adaptive Office at Recreation and Parks at 410-222-7313 for additional information. The following is a listing of programs for which volunteers are needed:
- · 10–11:30 am, Sats., beginning Jan. 7, 2012, for 10 weeks: Adaptive Basketball for ages 5-15 at Millersville. Participants learn basic skills, sportsmanship and the rules of the game. Wheelchairs are welcome.
· 12:30–2 pm, Sats., beginning Jan. 7, 2012, for 10 weeks: Adaptive Floor Hockey for ages 5-15 at Millersville. Participants learn basic skills, sportsmanship and the rules of the game. Wheelchairs are welcome.
· 10 am–2 pm, Sats., beginning Jan. 7, 2012, for 10 weeks: Recreation Program for ages 8-21 at Millersville. Children develop social skills through sports play, arts and crafts, and other special activities while parents have a few hours to themselves. Bring lunch.
· 6:30– 9:30 pm, Fris., Feb. 3, 2012, to May 18, 2012: Teen/Young Adult Social Club for Youth with Developmental Delays, ages 13 and up, at both Millersville and Edgewater locations. Youth with differing abilities get together with peers for dancing, games, parties and socialization. There is a 1 to 5 supervision ratio.
Arundel Lodge, Inc.
Arundel Lodge is a community mental health center serving mentally ill adults. The Lodge is in need of volunteers who know sign language to interpret for deaf clients who attend the Lodge. Interpreters are needed Monday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon or any time within those hours. Contact Ann Jackson at [email protected] or 443-433-5942 to volunteer or for more information.
Citizen Corps Council in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis
The Citizens Corps Council includes community service organizations, faith based organizations and the private sector which engage in specific projects in working groups. The Council’s mission is to make the County and City safer, stronger and better prepared through service and volunteerism that focuses on all hazards, emergency preparedness, and public safety. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and the public is invited. Friends of Kinder Farm Park
The Friends of Kinder Farm Park is a non-profit volunteer group of citizens working to enhance this county park in Millersville off of Jumpers Hole Rd. Volunteers are needed to help with the interior renovation of a 1925 farmhouse in January 2012. There will be a need for “hammer users” as well as people to haul debris to a dumpster. We also need some furniture moved upstairs. Gloves and masks will be provided. We plan to work on Sat. Jan. 7, and Sat. Jan. 21, 2012 from 9:00 AM– 1:00 PM, or later. Moveable Feast
This nonprofit provides home delivered meals for clients who are homebound with HIV/AIDS. Volunteers, as young as 16 (15 & under w/adult) are needed to deliver meals Mon.– Fri. between 9 am–3 pm and 5 pm–8 pm. Meal delivery takes about 1 hr and drivers have flexibility in setting their schedules. Volunteers are asked to deliver once a week or once a month. Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County, January 16, 2012, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service
The Center is the county-wide clearinghouse for information about volunteering throughout Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in the following special event:
· 11:30 am–2:30 pm, Monday, January 16, 2012, Day of Service: To make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a “Day On, Not a Day Off,” the Banneker-Douglass Museum and the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County are partnering with several nonprofits to offer volunteer activities at the Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin St., Annapolis, MD 21401. Volunteers of all ages will gather from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm on Monday, January 16, 2012 to work on a variety of service projects benefitting the community. Participants may sign up for 11:30 to 1:00, 1:00 to 2:30, or both time periods. Pre-registration is encouraged. Light refreshments will be provided.
