Attorneys Argue In MD Redistricting Lawsuit. A lawyer for nine plaintiffs who said Maryland’s congressional redistricting map dilutes the black vote has argued his case in federal court.Jason Torchinsky told a three-judge panel on Tuesday that Maryland should have three majority-minority congressional districts instead of two.Torchinsky said the Democrat-controlled General Assembly failed to make Rep. Steny Hoyer’s district a majority-minority one in order to protect the high-ranking incumbent from a black challenger.

O’Malley Met To Discuss Not Funding Death Penalty. Gov. Martin O’Malley, who opposes capital punishment, held a July meeting with two lawmakers and a death penalty opponent to discuss the possibility of ending funding for executions in the budget for the next fiscal year.However, an O’Malley representative said it’s unlikely that the governor will follow through with the idea.”It’s not likely, but no final decision has been made,” Raquel Guillory said.

Police: Mall Shooting Victim Was Targeted. Baltimore County police said Tuesday that Monday’s fatal shooting in the parking lot of Towson Town Center was “absolutely not” a random act.Meanwhile, mall officials said they are cooperating with police on the investigation. Authorities identified the victim of the shooting as 19-year-old Rodney Pridget. The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Monday outside a building that was filled with holiday shoppers.

Jobless Rate Continues To Decline In Maryland.  Maryland employers added enough jobs in November to push the unemployment percentage down to 6.9.The figure was announced Tuesday by the Department of Labor and Licensing Regulation.The October figure in Maryland was 7.2 percent.Maryland continued to beat the national unemployment rate and those of nearby states.Nationally, the jobless figure stood at 8.6 percent for November.The rate has been in steady decline in recent weeks.
