Naval Academy Midshipmen Make Contributions To Local Community

Naval Academy midshipmen from the Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) are spreading the holiday cheer this season with  record food and gift donations to those in need in the Annapolis area.

Along with the USNA Chaplains’ office, MAG collected an outstanding 15,330 pounds of food for the Harvest for the Hungry food drive benefiting the Anne Arundel County Food Bank.  This year’s event kicked-off Oct. 17 and continued through Dec. 1, and the Naval Academy donation exceeded last year’s record 3.2 tons of food.

Project leaders Midshipman 2nd Class (junior) Shan Mandrayar of Bonsan, Calif., and Midshipman 2nd Class (junior) Matthew Daugherty of Monterey, Va., organized the midshipmen in setting-up collection boxes, raising awareness around the campus, and loading the trucks to deliver the food.

“The Midshipmen Action Group once again steps up to an important call to action by our local community,” said Miriam Stanicic, Naval Academy Community Relations Director.  “The Anne Arundel County Food Bank received over 15,000 pounds of food from the MAG this year thanks to Midshipman Mandrayar and Midshipman Daugherty’s dedication to feeding our local population in need during this holiday season.”

The Midshipmen Action Group also assisted local Marines by setting up donation bins on campus and collecting donations of hundreds of toys for the Toys for Tots drive.

This year’s Giving Tree gift collection at the academy, led by the Academy’s 6th Company, also was the most successful event to date.  This year, The Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Primary School collected for 1,100 angels and collected approximately 400 more gifts than last year. In conjunction with the Salvation Army, each year midshipmen from the academy’s 6th Company decorate a holiday tree with paper angel ornaments  provided by the Salvation Army, which each represent a local child in need.

Established in 1992 as a community relations program organized and maintained by the Brigade of Midshipmen, MAG currently offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects.  Coordinated with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners, MAG averages over 20,000 hours of community service annually.  MAG prepares midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
