David Alexander Salon And Spa Event Raises $70,000

Good spirits filled the air as representatives of three local non-profits gathered in the lobby of David Alexander Salon and Spa Wednesday, December 14th . Their purpose was to take part in a check presentation to the Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Center and to METAvivor – two local organizations that help women who have or have had breast cancer. Each received a check for $35,000. The money was raised through the Style on the Runway hair and fashion show held just in October at the Loews Annapolis and organized by David Alexander Salon and Spa and volunteers from Stepping out for Breast Cancer.

On hand to receive the funds were Dr. Lorraine Tafra, Director of the AAMC Breast Center and Dian (CJ) Corneliussen-James, President of METAvivor Research and Support, Inc. The Breast Center will use its funds to create a Survivorship Program for those patients who have gone through chemotherapy and or radiation and need ongoing psycho-social support as they transition back into the day-to-day of life after treatment. METAvivor, which has a very active local support program for stage IV breast cancer patients, will put its funds toward the organization’s fourth research grant. Said Corneliussen-James, “We are the only organization that dedicates 100% of its research funds to stage IV breast cancer research. We fund the type of research that will ultimately save the lives not only of our members, but of all stage IV metastatic breast cancer patients.”

Presenting the checks were the three chair people of Style on the Runway, Scott Brainard and Linda Swanson, Co-Owners of David Alexander Salon and Spa, and Yvette Parrish, President of Stepping Out for Breast Cancer. “Our two organizations sort of fell in together,” said Swanson, explaining how they joined forces for the event. “We knew we wanted to do a show and make it meaningful for the people in the community and our clients. We connected with Stepping Out through a client, and from the outset knew we had found a great partner.” Added Parrish, “Stepping Out has been raising money in the Annapolis community for many years, but this gave us the opportunity to do something new and fresh. The fact that we were able to give away $70,000 tonight as a result of our efforts is amazingly gratifying.”

Mark your calendars now for the second annual Style on the Runway Hair and Fashion Charity Show Oct 7, 2012.
