World AIDS Day December 1

Thursday, December 1, 2011, is World AIDS Day. The theme this year is “Towards A Coalition of Concern.” The Anne Arundel County World AIDS Day Committee and the County Department of Health will observe the day with various free activities in Annapolis, including a walk, HIV testing and counseling, and inspirational and educational speakers.
This year’s event will center on the ongoing need for awareness and fair treatment in caring for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. At noon, there will be a Walk of Witness from the City Dock in Annapolis to First Presbyterian Church, 171 Duke of Gloucester Street in Annapolis. At the end of the walk, there will be a special time for prayer and remembrance at the church. Free and confidential HIV counseling and testing will be offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the church. Testing is rapid; results take just 20 minutes. Either walk in or call 410-222-7108 for a convenient appointment time.
An evening program will be held at First Christian Community Church, 1800 Hall Brown Road in Annapolis, beginning at 7 p.m. The event will include guest speakers, music and a candle lighting tribute to honor loved ones who have died from AIDS.
Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Angela M. Wakhweya will give the welcome and opening statement. Reverend David North, Pastor of the Holy Redeemer MCC, will give the keynote address. Through his personal reflections, Reverend North will talk about the needs within the HIV community. Reverend Karen Johnson, Senior Pastor First Christian Community Church, will also speak, offering a local faith and community perspective. Speaker Vicki Stovall, Senior Public Health Advisor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for HIV/Hepatitis/STD/TB Prevention, will provide health statistics and educational information. Ms. Stovall is on assignment at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Center for STI Prevention.
