Severn School moved up to first place in round two of the Anne Arundel County High School Mathematics Competition hosted by Anne Arundel Community College, exchanging places with Chesapeake Science Point Charter School (CSP). Annapolis High School retained its third place rank.
The Nov. 5 event on the AACC Arnold campus drew 102 participants from 14 Anne Arundel County public and private high schools. Organized by AACC, the competition has five matches. Each match is divided into two phases. In the first phase, students work individually to answer as many of six questions as possible during the 30-minute time limit. Three students achieved a perfect score: Jack Andraka from North County High School, Willy Griffin from Key School and Davis Wootton-Klebanoff from Arundel High School.
In the second phase of the competition, the students work in teams of up to five members each to answer another set of six questions in 30 minutes. Severn School was the only team to achieve a perfect score on this part of the competition.
School scores are computed by adding the best team score to the average of the top three individuals’ scores. Second-round scores: Severn School, 10.67; CSP, 10.0; Annapolis High, 9.67; Key School, 9.0; Broadneck High, 7.33; North County High, 6.67; Archbishop Spalding High, 6.33; Severna Park High and South River High, tied at 6.0 each; Arundel High and Old Mill High, tied at 5.33 each; Chesapeake High, 4.67; Glen Burnie High, 2.67; and Meade High, 1.33.
The overall competition rankings: Severn School, 20.0; CSP, 19.67; Annapolis High, 17.67; Key School, 16.67; Broadneck High, 15.0; Severna Park High, 13.67; South River High, 13.0; Archbishop Spalding High and Arundel High, tied at 12.67 each; North County High, 10.33; Old Mill High, 8.33; Glen Burnie High, 5.0; Chesapeake High, 4.67; Meade High, 3.0; and Southern High, 2.33 (did not participate this round).
