Schools Up The Ante For Harvest For The Hungry

Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell has challenged schools and school system offices and departments to set a new record for donations to the Harvest for the Hungry – Kids Helping Kids food campaign this year by increasing the collection of food and cash donations by 5 percent each. A year ago, the system’s schools and departments collected 142,992 pounds of food and $97,476 in cash. To meet Dr. Maxwell’s goal, 150,142 pounds of food and $102,350 would need to be collected.

“We raise the bar of expectations every year, and every year I am inspired by the lengths to which our students, parents, teachers, and staff go to help our county’s less fortunate,” Dr. Maxwell said. “Children who worry more about why they didn’t have breakfast or whether they will have dinner can’t very well be expected to apply themselves fully to their academic endeavors. Our duty as a school system and a county is to do everything we can to help every single child achieve his or her true potential, and this is one big way that we can help. I urge all of our employees, parents, and students, as well as our community and business partners and other governmental agencies, to join us in this drive. Together, we are creating a brighter future for children and, ultimately, for all of us.”

Schools across the county will hold a variety of events in conjunction with the campaign from Monday through November 4. Anyone wishing to donate money or canned goods to the Harvest For The Hungry – Kids Helping Kids drive can do so at any county public school or office or on the AACPS website, www.aacps.org. Checks dropped off at schools should be made out to the “Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank” with the notation “Kids Helping Kids” in the memo line.
