Make A Difference Day

Residents of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County will join millions of Americans to volunteer on Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 22, 2011. Sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with the HandsOn Network and Newman’s Own, the annual Make a Difference Day is the nation’s largest day of community service.

The Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County is recruiting and referring volunteers for many volunteer activities scheduled for October 15th through October 29th this year. If you cannot participate on Saturday, Oct. 22nd, another listed project might fit your time availability.

A few of the activities taking place in our area this year include

Bello Machre

Volunteers are needed on Sat., Oct. 22, 2011 from 2pm – 6pm for our Make a Difference Day Picnic. Bello Machre is seeking volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, oversee games and activities, and greeting guests. The fun begins at 3 pm! The Caring Collection, Inc.

The Caring Collection will celebrate Make a Difference Day, Sat. Oct. 22, 2011, with student groups participating on that day. Our Annual Sale is Nov. 5-6, 2011, so there are lots of projects that volunteers, both students and adults can do to help us prepare for our big event. This nonprofit organization raises funds for cancer research and patient care at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital by making and selling stained glass angels and sun catchers. Friends of Quiet Waters Park

The non-profit organization supports the operation of the park and the events that take place there. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed throughout the year for a variety of tasks.

Happy Helpers for the Homeless

This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless. Contact Bobbi Coffman at 443-433-2416 for more information about volunteering on all projects and events.

· 7:30–10:30 am, Sat., Oct. 22, 2011, Make a Difference Day: This is the 17th year Happy Helpers has held this event. A group of those we serve will be taken for breakfast at the Glen Burnie Golden Corral, and afterwards clients will receive job search assistance, haircuts, clothing, toiletry gift bags, and lunch

· 5–9 pm, Sat., Oct. 29, 2011, “Light the Night” Walk for Leukemia & Lymphoma: Happy Helpers raise pledges and walk in honor of Thomas Cleaver, III, Cindy Cox, and Mr. Joseph Nowalski. Participants will meet at Cromwell Light Rail Station in Glen Burnie at 5:00 pm. Food will be served at the end of the walk.

Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. Oct. 8-31, 2011, Pumpkin Patch, 10 am–6 pm, Open Daily: Stop by at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church on Spa Rd. in Annapolis to buy pumpkins to help the homeless citizens of Anne Arundel County at the Light House Homeless Shelter. Bring the kids for special fall fun with seasonal crafts and activities, baked goods and thousands of wonderful pumpkins! Please bring canned goods to stock the pantry at the Light House. New Life Fellowship International Ministries

New Life Fellowship International Ministries is a diverse, family-oriented, nondenominational church located in Hanover, MD.

· Sat., Oct. 22, 2011 – New Life Fellowship will be volunteering at Morningside Assisted Living at 3pm for Make a Difference Day. We play and call one hour of Bingo and then we spend an hour visiting with the Nursing home residents. We welcome participants to join in. Robert A. Pascal Youth & Family Services

The organization’s mission is to promote optimal social, emotional, and mental health by providing accessible, innovative, and comprehensive individual, family, and group counseling as well as educational services to diverse communities.

• 8:00–11:30 a.m., Sat., Oct. 29, 2011 annual 5K Run and One Mile Halloween Fun Walk: Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, trail marking, runner assistance and general race organization. All volunteers will report to the Park Plaza Lot in front of Robert A. Pascal Youth and Family Services at 570H Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD.
