Catch a Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) Fishing Event, 8:00 am–1:00 pm, Sun., Oct. 23, 2011

This event sponsored by the C.A.S.T. Foundation, and a variety of partnering federal and local groups and agencies, including the Anne Arundel County Dept. of Recreation and Parks, YMCA Camp Letts, Midshipmen Action Group, and Maryland Sportsman’s groups provides special needs children and their parents with an exciting opportunity to spend a half day fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. The children also will be given gifts including a rod and reel, tackle box and more. Participants are invited to sign up for this event. Volunteer boat captains with boats are also needed at Camp Letts by 9:00 am, to provide this opportunity for these children; Camp Letts does not have boat launching facilities, so boaters will have to access the Camp Letts wharf from the water sufficiently early to arrive for the 9:00 am departure. Boat captains must pre-register for the event. Food Link

Established in 1991, this non-profit hunger relief organization provides free food and other essentials to people in need in Anne Arundel County and four counties on the Eastern Shore. A bookkeeper is needed for monthly checkbook reconciliation, entry of all financial info into QuickBooks or other bookkeeping database, and preparation of quarterly financial statement for the board; candidate may work at home or office and year-round average of about 2-hours per month is required. Volunteers with trucks or vans are needed to pick up food from distribution centers, restaurants and others and deliver to food pantries, shelters and other locations serving the hungry.  Assist with emergency food pantry and emergency baby pantry items. Mt. Olive Community Life Center

This is a program designed to mentor youth within the Greater Parole community to help improve their academic achievement while fostering a positive attitude toward learning.  Mature student volunteers, ages 18 and older, are needed to teach basic skills in math, algebra, geometry, basic computer skills, homework assistance, reading, etc. In addition, volunteers are needed to provide office assistance during the day, and help with building and grounds maintenance. Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue

This nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC rescues, provides medical care, rehabilitation and placement by adoption of homeless and/or abandoned cocker spaniels and cocker spaniel mixes to good homes in the Mid-Atlantic region. Volunteers are needed to provide foster homes until adoption, provide transport of animals, help with fundraising, and to attend adoption shows at PetSmart locations three weekends per month. Severna Park Community Center

Volunteer opportunities include working with youth, tutoring in Math or English at the After School Middle School Program, serving on the Board or a standing committee, helping with maintenance work, gardening or coordinating reservations and working with events. Sarah’s House Volunteer Orientations –Every Week

Sarah’s House is a supportive housing program for homeless women, children, and men in Anne Arundel County providing case management, childcare, transportation and employment services at Ft. Meade.  Volunteer orientations are offered most Friday evenings 7:00pm-8:30pm at Sarah’s House.  Volunteers can work directly with guests or behind the scenes. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, businesses and groups of all faiths and ages. Current needs include: 1.Volunteers for evening childcare from 6–8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays while parents are attending GED classes and AA groups; 2. Volunteers for evening childcare from 6– 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on October 11th while parents are attending accounting certification classes; 3. Volunteers for afternoon childcare from 4– 5pm on Mondays while parents are attending life skills classes; and 4. Volunteers for tutoring children with their homework from 5:30pm until 7pm Mondays through Thursdays during the school year. State’s Attorneys Office

Style on the Runway, Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011

This fun event (See: www.styleontherunway.com) is being held at Loews Annapolis Hotel to benefit the Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Center and METAvivor, a program that helps local people suffering from Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Volunteers are needed from Noon-6 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 to escort VIP guests to their seats for the Hair and Fashion Show, provide assistance-as necessary-to guests with special needs, provide guidance or directions to restrooms, ATM’s, public telephones, raffles, Bingo, etc., and to help with clean-up. Volunteers will need to dress in all black or very “fashion forward” and will receive a comp ticket for their help. Individual and group volunteers can help plant and care for trees in their community. Help to restore and protect the natural environment where you live, work, and play. Volunteer tree projects are fun and rewarding! The few hours spent improving your community forests can make your neighborhoods better places to live for generations to come.
