 AA County Department. of Recreation and Parks

Recreation and Parks has a variety of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults associated with specific events at county parks as well as programs that are listed on their web site at www.aacounty.org/recparks.   • ·         4:30 AM–12:30 PM, Sunday, October 2, 2011, Triathlon: Volunteers are needed as course monitors, to help with registration and refreshments, and at the start and finish lines. Greater Annapolis Interfaith Network (GAIN), Annual Celebration, Sun., Oct. 23, 2011

GAIN is holding its 5th Annual event to facilitate the sharing of information among Annapolis area faith-based and other service organizations from 2–5 pm, Sun., Oct. 23, 2011 at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis. Participating organizations will be provided with a table and chairs and may provide brochures, slide shows, and other displays to get the word out about their programs which benefit the Annapolis community. H.O.P.E., Inc. (He Opens the Path to Everyone)

H.O.P.E., Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the north AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. H.O.P.E. is currently looking for some assistance with processing (sorting, testing, reconditioning, pricing) yard sale items at the warehouse and to help with warehouse cleanup. We are also seeking church or civic groups to sort donated clothing at their facilities. Donations of furniture, infant and children’s clothing as well as financial donations are needed.   • ·         8 a.m. –12 Noon, Sat., Sept. 17, 2011, Yard Sale: Volunteers are needed to help with a very large yard sale at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at Maple and Hammonds Ferry Rd., Linthicum Heights, MD., on Sept. 17, 2011. Funds raised will fund our programs and budget. Also needed are volunteers to help with set up from 9a.m.–1 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 16 and take down after the yard sale from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on Sept. 17.  Call 410-859-1297 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.
  • ·         5–8 p.m., Wed, Sept. 21, 2011, YEP Miniature Golf Fundraiser: Sponsors, Participants, and Volunteers are being sought for this fun event which is sponsored by the Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Group and is being held at the Arundel Golf Park, 1501 Dorsey Rd., Glen Burnie. Dinner and dessert are provided. All proceeds will benefit H.O.P.E. for All. The Maryland Food Bank

The Maryland Food Bank is looking for volunteers at its location in Halethorpe (So. Baltimore) on Mon.– Fri. for 3- hour shifts, from 9:00am–4:00pm to help sort and box food. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age or older and closed toed shoes must be worn. From time to time volunteer office opportunities become available. Critical need for donated products and funds: Because donated products are at a low level and the demand is up due to economic conditions, soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters are not getting the food that they need to feed the hungry in Maryland communities.  Visit the web site at: www.mdfoodbank.org to donate.

 

Maryland Seafood Festival, Fri.-Mon., Sept. 9-12, 2011

The Maryland Seafood Festival is back this year at Sandy Point Park, September 10–11, 2011. A large number of volunteers are needed to fill various positions throughout the festival as well as the Friday before for setup and the Monday after to help with cleanup. Help is needed at the gate, security, with parking, ticket booths, and more.  Parking is free for volunteers and food vouchers will be provided. National Aquarium Chesapeake Bay Initiative Habitat Restoration Projects

  • ·         Sat., Sept. 24, 2011Fort McHenry Field Day (National Public Lands Day): The ten-acre tidal wetland bordering Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine now serves as a refuge for many species of wildlife including sea ducks, heron, muskrats, and red-winged blackbirds Join the Conservation Department at the National Aquarium in Baltimore at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to help clean up the bay.  The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for community volunteers, ages 14 and older, to participate, rain or shine.  Activities include debris cleanup, planting native marsh grasses, trail maintenance and more.   • ·         Sat., Oct. 1, 2011, Masonville Cove Project: Volunteers are needed to help plant native shrubs along 2 acres of restored wetland at Masonville Marine Terminal. Your volunteer efforts will be part of the long-term mission to revitalize the Baltimore Harbor, and will help to create valuable aquatic habitat in Baltimore. This fringe wetland will create foraging ground for fish species like striped bass and white perch, and will provide nesting habitat for shorebirds. Pets on Wheels/Life Enrichment Program/Mom & Me

Volunteers for all these programs visit one-on-one or with their pets or children at homeless shelters, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, adult day-care centers or other sites where people lack visits from family and friends. Volunteers are asked to share at least one hour each week at the facility of your choice. With more than 76 facilities to choose from throughout the county, there are many opportunities to brighten someone’s day close to your home.
