Johns Hopkins To Host National Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference Oct. 28-29

“Empowerment Through Education” is the theme of this year’s Metastatic Breast Cancer Network National Conference at Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center (Baltimore). The free conference kicks off with a reception on Oct. 28 and concludes with a full-day session on Oct. 29.

The 2011 conference is hosted in conjunction with Lillie D. Shockney, RN, BS, MAS,  and the  Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Some scholarships are available to defray travel and lodging costs. All MBCN events are free and open to family, friends and health care professionals.

“The Metastatic Breast Cancer Network was created to serve the distinct needs of people who have an incurable form of breast cancer,” said Michele Przypyszny, MBCN president. “This annual conference is an essential vehicle for spreading our message of education and awareness. It’s also an excellent opportunity to hear from some leading breast cancer researchers and medical professionals while networking with hundreds of people who ‘get it.’”

Attendees will hear from Johns Hopkins University medical and research experts including: Stephen Baylin, MD  (“Cutting Edge Research); Leisha Ann Emens, MD, PhD (“Immunotherapy”); Carolyn Hendricks, MD  (“MBC 201: Broaden your Knowledge”); Robert S. Miller, MD (“MBC101: Become Informed”); Tanya Michelle Prowell, MD (“Clinical Trials vs. Standard of Care”); and Richard Cedric Zellars, MD (“Bone Metastases”).

Breakout sessions will include:

  • Caregivers’ Roles
  • A Patient’s Perspective on Navigating Social Security Disability
  • Living with Uncertainty: An MBC Panel Discussion
  • Role of Surgery in Soft Tissue Mets
  • Managing Side Effects
  • Nutrition and Wellness
