County Executive John R. Leopold today announced that Dr. Angela Wakhweya has been appointed as the new County Health Officer.

“Dr. Wakhweya brings a wealth of public health experience and an extensive knowledge of how the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene works,” County Executive Leopold said. “She will be a tremendous asset to us in promoting education about communicable diseases and responding to health emergencies. I want to thank Douglas Hart, who returned from retirement to serve as Acting Health Officer and has helped our Health Department continue to move forward during the transition.”

Under State and County authority, more than one out of every three County residents is directly served by a Department of Health program each year. The Department provides more than 1,400,000 personal and environmental health services to County residents and businesses annually.

Dr. Wakhweya earned her medical degree from Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda, and a master’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London. Most recently she served as Deputy Director of the Infectious Disease and Environmental Health Administration of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Dr. Wakhweya’s appointment is effective October 12.
