Cohen Pitches In For Cleanup Effort

Mayor Joshua J. Cohen worked side-by-side with public work crews today, picking up storm debris along Annapolis streets.

Several teams spread out across the City picking up storm debris, while other crews picked up regular yard recycling and refuse.

“The City is doing a full-court-press to clear away the debris and get the city back to normal as soon as possible,” Mayor Cohen said. “Residents need to know they can put storm debris out next to the curb, along with their trash, on designated refuse collection days until all the debris is gone.”

While Friday, September 2 is a scheduled furlough day and City government offices will be closed, Mayor Josh Cohen directed that Friday’s furlough day for public works crews be rescheduled to a later date, in order to allow trash collection to proceed tomorrow.

The mayor’s shift work offered a “hands-on” understanding of public works and gave him an opportunity to talk to residents about critical City services.

As City Council wrestles to come up with cost saving measures, contracting for solid and yard waste collection is being considered. A request for proposal (RFP) is currently being drafted and is expected to be distributed in October.  Council will deliberate on the measure in early 2012, and make a decision in time for budget preparation.

“Today was about getting the job done,” the mayor added. “Citizens need to know their demands for services are being met. I applaud the men and women at DPW on a job well done.”

September 5, Labor Day Monday, is a City holiday.  City government offices will be closed. There will be no refuse, yard waste or recycling collections; however, a recycling and yard waste make up day will be Wednesday, September 7.
