Anne Arundel County Community Action Partnership’s Head Start Program

Head Start programs are in need of volunteers, 18 years and older, at seven sites throughout the county to serve as classroom assistants and for informal mentoring of students and families (at least 3.5 hours/week) and as story time readers at least 30 minutes per week. Medical and background checks are required. Also, translators (primarily Spanish) are needed for four hours one-day per week to assist Head Start Teachers with home visits and handbook/program presentations to families. AA County Department. of Recreation and Parks

Recreation and Parks has a variety of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults associated with specific events at county parks as well as programs that are listed on their web site at www.aacounty.org/recparks.   • ·         4:30 AM–12:30 PM, Sunday, October 2, 2011, Triathlon: Volunteers are needed as course monitors, to help with registration and refreshments, and at the start and finish lines. Arundel Lodge

This nonprofit has residential and day Psychiatric Rehabilitation Programs for approximately 160 adults with severe mental illness. Volunteers are needed to assist the staff to teach life skills, play board or card games at the drop-in center, go for walks with members, and help with social or recreational events. General office help is also needed. In this regard there is an immediate need for someone age 16 and up, 1-2 hrs, a week, between 9 am–4 pm, to help with filing, shredding and sorting. Art Gallery: Recently the art department at Arundel Lodge opened an art gallery called the Open Eye Gallery. Volunteers are needed to help with the following: publicity, label making, selection of art work, framing, photography, updating website coordinator, gallery sitting, helping find venues to show work, mentors for artists, donation of art materials from the community, and volunteer drivers. Friends of Quiet Waters Park

The non-profit organization supports the operation of the park and the events that take place there. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed throughout the year for a variety of tasks to support events such as Earth Day in April, Summer Concert Series from Jun.–Sept., Howl-O-Ween Bark ‘n Bash in late Oct., and the Arts Festival held in the fall each year.   • ·         10am-5pm, Sat.-Sun., Sept. 24-25, 2011, 21st Annual Arts & Music Festival: Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks for this two-day celebration of the fine, decorative, and performing arts of the Chesapeake Region. Eastport Girls Club (EGC)

  • ·   EGC is seeking high school senior or adult volunteers to serve as weekly tutors on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm to participants of the EGC; participants are in grades 5–9. For consistency and predictability to the participants, tutors should commit to an academic year of service (early Sept. through early Jun.). Training will be provided and a background check is required.   • ·         5:00–9:00 pm, Wed., August 31, 2011, Eastport Girls Club Benefit: Noodles & Company at the Westfield Annapolis Mall is donating 25% of all sales (dine-in or carry-out) between the hours of 5-9 pm to the Eastport Girls Clubs. Customers just need to mention Eastport Girls Club for them to get credit for the sale.  Funds raised will support the tutoring and mentoring program. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

At the Sanctuary, children and adults collect water samples, clear trails, weigh turtles, guide visitors on nature walks, draw maps, lead canoe trips, make posters, seine for fish, host the Visitor Center on weekends, and more.   • ·         10 am–12:30 pm, Sat., Oct. 8, 2011 and Jan. 7, 2012, Water Chemistry Research Training: Volunteers are needed to assist with the water chemistry component of the Watershed Stream Study. 24th Anniversary Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, Sat. Sept. 24, 2011

Volunteer opportunities are available now and on the event date for the 24th Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival. The 24tht annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, coordinated by Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., raises an awareness of the African-American heritage and the common challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture.  The festival will be held at the Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 24, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: set up, refreshments, clean up, and more.  For more information contact KuntaKinteCelebrations@comcast.net, call 443-623-2856 or visit www.kuntakinte.org.

 

Project Green 9/11 Day of Service

Come join other volunteers in cleaning up Jonas Green Park in Annapolis from 8:30 a.m.–Noon on Sun., September 11, 2011.  Be a part of Coastal Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind.  Join us by beginning the day with a commemorative ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Maryland WW II monument on Ritchie Hwy., Annapolis, overlooking Jonas Green Park. Preregistration is required by noon on Thursday, September 8, 2011. Waiver Forms must be filled out ahead of time for those under age 18. Bring gloves, any gardening tools that you have available, and wear closed toe shoes. Minimum Age: Anyone under 16 years of age requires adult supervision, 16 and older adult supervision not required.
