Anne Arundel County Public Schools AVID Tutoring Program (County-wide)
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutoring Program supports students in grades 6 through 12 who are in the academic middle. AVID tutors, age 18 and older, will be trained to work with small groups of students during the AVID elective class. These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models. Tutors would commit to at least one semester of tutoring at one of the AVID sites for a minimum of one hour per week, during the regular school day. Chesapeake Ecology Center
The Chesapeake Ecology Center (CEC) works with its members, volunteers, community groups, and students, including at-risk students at Adams Academy at Adams Park (where it is based), to provide environmental education and, at the same time, develop on-the-ground habitat restoration/protection projects. The CEC holds volunteer education/planting days and tours mid-April through November, and provides technical assistance to a variety of community and school groups for their projects. City of Annapolis, Main Street Program
The city is seeking residents who will volunteer their time to help revitalize the Main Street Program; it is also proposing to expand the boundaries of the program beyond its current boundaries. The program’s goals are to promote shopping local, support all establishments, create family events that draw individuals to the local businesses, educate on the importance of historic preservation, improve communication, sponsor one calendar of events for the Downtown Annapolis District, and evolve into a strong thriving community. Emergency Preparedness Fair, Sat., Sept. 10, 2011
The Anne Arundel County and City of Annapolis Offices of Emergency Management and Citizen Corps Council have begun preparations for their Second Annual Emergency Preparedness Fair. The Fair will take place on Saturday, September 10th, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association’s fairgrounds on Post 40. There will be equipment from the Police and Fire Department as well as many other organizations on display at the event. Games, food, demonstrations and information will be available Volunteers are needed on the day of the event to help with set up and take down and other duties during the day. Light House Shelter
The Shelter is seeking to fill a full-time Assistant Volunteer Coordinator position by August 31, 2011 to serve from Sept. 14, 2011 through Jul. 31, 2012; this is an 11 month, full-time (40 hours/week) position as a member of the Volunteer Maryland (VM) AmeriCorps program serving at Light House. A stipend, an education award and some benefits are provided. The Coordinator will recruit and coordinate volunteers that will provide operations support to the shelter. The person will work with the Volunteer Coordinator to provide more contact with the volunteers to ensure a meaningful and purposeful volunteer experience, and will help to orient many new volunteers and will provide support to the over 700 existing volunteers and groups. Lost Towns Project of Anne Arundel County/AA Co. Trust for Preservation (Annapolis/Central County)
In addition to our dig days, we also encourage volunteers to participate in archaeological excavations or artifact processing in our new laboratory all year long. There is no previous experience requirement for any of our volunteers, and we will teach them everything they need to know! Maryland Seafood Festival, Fri.-Mon., Sept. 9-12, 2011
The Maryland Seafood Festival is back this year at Sandy Point Park, September 10–11, 2011. A large number of volunteers are needed to fill various positions throughout the festival as well as the Friday before for setup and the Monday after to help with cleanup. Help is needed at the gate, security, with parking, ticket booths, and more. Parking is free for volunteers and food vouchers will be provided. Newseum
Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed to assist Newseum staff in many vital roles at the museum in Washington, DC. Volunteers are needed to assist Newseum staff in the following areas: Visitor services; Public programs and educational workshops; Collections management and artifact processing; Research and/or writing; Word processing, mailings and other administrative functions; and, testing/evaluating ongoing programs. North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON)
NCEON in cooperation with area churches helps persons in their community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency prescription needs, food pantry or other services. NCEON needs occasional volunteers to staff the office, stock shelves, bag food for the pantry and donate food and other items for the pantry. YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County
There is an immediate need for volunteers, age 16 and up, to help students with homework after school, with arts and crafts projects, and to prepare meals for such students. Guest speakers are also being sought to talk to students about their careers. There is also a part-time position available for someone to work with students in the after school program three days a week.
