Annapolis Woodworkers Guild

This nonprofit educational and cooperative organization of men and women work with wood and want to learn more about the fine art of woodworking. They meet at 7:00 PM on the second Thursday each month at the Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819 W. Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD 21035. The Guild builds planters, benches, signs, tables and other items for local nonprofit organizations that provide the lumber. Anne Arundel County Police Department

  • ·         Reserve Officer Program: Volunteers are needed for its Reserve Officer program. This is a uniformed position to assist sworn officers in traffic control, administrative duties, community relations, etc.  Volunteers must be over 21, undergo a criminal background check, hours of availability are flexible. Reserve Officers work assignments all hours of the day and weekends. A minimum of 16 service hours per month is required and volunteers can be placed at any of the four district stations. 
  • ·         Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS): The VIPS Program is designed to involve civilian volunteers in non-enforcement roles within the Anne Arundel County Police Department. Members of the VIPS Program share their time and talents performing such tasks as clerical assistance, computer programming, crime analysis, data processing, graphic arts, photography and other tasks as the need arises. VIPS personnel do not wear uniforms nor are they compensated monetarily. Applicants must be age 18 or older, have a Maryland Driver’s License with a good driving record, and be capable of performing a minimum of 16 hours of volunteer service per month.

Anne Arundel County Veteran Affairs Commission

County Executive John R. Leopold is seeking applicants for the Veteran Affairs Commission. The 13-member Commission is a forum for all Anne Arundel County veterans of military service. It is charged with identifying opportunities to improve financial and other assistance to veterans, including higher education and healthcare, as well as providing statistics and organizing events for our troops and veterans. Applicants must have separated from military service under honorable conditions, and be willing to serve a three-year term concurrent with the County Executive’s remaining term in office. Patapsco Valley State Park (North County/Baltimore)

The Park is seeking volunteers for a variety of positions including bike and mounted patrols, maintenance & management of camp sites, trails, the nature center, and more. Governor’s Volunteer Appreciation Day at the Maryland State Fair, Sunday, August 28, 2011

Volunteers are needed to lead family-friendly events under the Governor’s Tent and greet Fair-goers at entrance gates. Volunteers will work in teams of 5 or more as follows: 1. Tent Set-Up (assemble tables and activity stations, blow and tie up balloons, hang banners and signs); 2. Greet volunteers and their families at the three entrances of the Fairgrounds; and 3. Tent activity leader (family-friendly activities will include cards for members of the military, face painting, bubble station, and more). Most volunteers will be needed for shifts of 3-4 hours, and volunteers will be oriented via conference call or in person (as requested and schedules permit). Volunteers will report to the white tent between the Administration Building and Exhibition Hall for registration when they arrive at the Fair; they will then receive their orientation, and complete their tasks as assigned. Volunteers will receive free entrance to the Fair, beverages, and snacks throughout their shifts. Volunteers will be reimbursed for parking costs on the day of the event. Honor Rows Program

Nominations Due August 19, 2011:  The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism, the Baltimore Ravens, and M&T Bank invite you to nominate a youth group or youth organization for the 12th Annual “Honor Rows” Program, honoring outstanding service to communities across Maryland. During each Baltimore Ravens home game throughout the 2011 regular season, the Honor Rows program will salute those who provide outstanding service to our communities. Applicants can include school or youth-based groups, units from military installations, and first-responders (law enforcement, firefighters, EMT personnel, etc.).  Honorees will receive tickets for a Ravens home game, in-game recognition, and public service announcements.  Find the nomination form at www.gosv.state.md.us

 

Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, Achievement Counts Speakers Bureau

Volunteers with various backgrounds from the business community are needed to share their work experiences with 7-9th grade classes across the state to help kids understand why doing well in high school is important to their futures. The Achievement Counts Speakers Bureau is a nationally recognized program designed to help Maryland high school students learn what it will take to succeed in the workforce. Speakers participate in a 3-hr training session in their County in and receive a training manual and lesson plan. Volunteer speakers typically are asked to make four 45-minute classroom presentations during the school year. Speakers select schools, dates and times that are convenient to them. Project Green 9/11 Day of Service

Join other volunteers in cleaning up Jonas Green Park in Annapolis from 8:30 a.m.–Noon on Sun., September 11, 2011.  Be a part of Coastal Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind.  There will be a commemorative ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Maryland WW II monument on Ritchie Hwy., Annapolis, overlooking Jonas Green Park. Preregistration is required by noon on Thursday, September 8, 2011. Waiver Forms must be filled out ahead of time for those under age 18. Bring gloves, any gardening tools that you have available, and wear closed toe shoes. Minimum Age: Anyone under 16 years of age requires adult supervision, 16 and older adult supervision not required. Watershed Stewards Academy, Fall 2011

The Watershed Stewards Academy trains and supports community leaders to serve as Master Watershed Stewards in the protection, restoration and conservation of our watersheds, working to reduce the negative impacts of storm water runoff in Anne Arundel County. If you live in Anne Arundel County, you can make a difference in the health of our waterways. Watershed Stewards Academy is recruiting for the next class of Master Watershed Stewards starting in fall 2011. Applications are due by September 12, 2011.
