Symphony’s Season Opener Commemorates 9/11 Ten Year Anniversary

When Joan Stillinger of Riva heard about this concert she said, “What a nice thing for an orchestra to do! This is one not to be missed”.

The Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Anna Binneweg, will open its Champions & Heroes season with a special concert on the actual date of the 10th anniversary  of 9/11 to honor our national heroes through some of the most powerful and emotional American music of the 20th century.  The concert, titled “Concert of Remembrance”, will include Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Howard Hanson’s The Requiem and William Shuman’s A Prayer in Time of War. The afternoon will conclude with Copland’s epic Lincoln Portrait with special guest narration by Dr. Marc Boensel, retired member of the U.S. Naval Academy Band and founder of the Annapolis Wind Symphony.

The concert will take place at the South River High School auditorium at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 11, 2011.  Stillinger already has the date on her calendar.

General admission is only $15, seniors are $10, and all students and children are free when accompanied by a paying adult.  Tickets are available at the door or beforehand at www.LondontowneSymphonyOrchestra.org or at (410) 562-8920.
The Champions & Heroes season will continue with a Chamber Concert featuring one of our most celebrated local pianists, William Bloomquist.  He will join forces with members of the LSO to provide the first LSO Chamber Concert in an afternoon of enchanting music accompanied by light refreshments and hors’doeuvres. The date in the fall  has not yet been determined, but will be announced.

The LSO season will continue with a concert on January 15, 2012 titled “The French Connection”. Guest conductor Taras Krysa from the University of Las Vegas will lead the LSO in an array of music inspired by the champions of French composition that will include Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 and Debussy’s Prelude to the afternoon of a Faun. Also featured will be solo violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv in Barber’s Violin Concerto. This concert is filled with mystifying orchestral colors and imagery – another afternoon not to be missed!

One of the LSO’s missions is to bring good music to young people and to encourage their involvement in music.  To that end, the LSO will once again feature the winners of the Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association (AAMTA) piano competition in a concert titled, “Rising Stars”.  Each will play one movement of a piano concerto yet to be announced.  Also on the program are Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and Stravinsky’s vibrant Firebird Suite – a concert appropriate for all ages.

The season will close on June 10, 2012, with Tchaikovsky’s exuberant and triumphant Symphony No. 5 – one of the most heroic works of all time. This concert will also feature Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie), a melodramatic opera filled with tragedy and despair.

An event also included in the season will be the LSO Gala, the second annual fundraising event at Homestead Gardens (Davidsonville) on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:00 PM. Participants will have the chance to meet and hear the musicians perform a variety of fun, yet intimate chamber music. The Gala will also feature wine tasting, hors’doeuvres, local chefs, and a silent auction during Homestead Gardens’ spring flower show.

The LSO is one of the area’s premier orchestras. They serve our community through inexpensive quality classical music by continuing to highlight the gems of the orchestral repertoire while featuring our youth, our wonderfully talented local soloists and outstanding orchestra members.
