Summer Work Experience Program Combats 21% Youth Unemployment Rate

In a time when 1 in 5 youth age 16-24 are unemployed, the YouthWorks! Summer Work Experience Program operated by Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation helped 62 Anne Arundel County youth secure a six-week work experience this summer, a number doubled from last year. On August 9th, individuals completing the program were honored for their participation in the program in a closing celebration.

AAWDC partnered with the Department of Social Services and the Division of Rehabilitation Services to provide work experiences for foster and disabled youth. Participants from workforce programs Step Up to Success at AACC and WAGES at North County High School also attended. An additional 22 community youth participated through funds dedicated by County Executive John Leopold. Participants were between the ages of 14 and 23. They were placed in 17 worksites representing companies, organizations and government agencies throughout the county, where they learned valuable work skills and expectations of the workplace. Seven of the youth were offered jobs based on their successes, and one will attend college in the fall.

“YouthWorks! is just the beginning of our focus on helping our county youth,” said Kirkland J. Murray, President and CEO of AAWDC. “Especially in an economic climate where employment can be difficult for our youth to secure, we must invest in our future workforce to develop the skills necessary for their success and gain valuable experience in the workplace.”
