Tax-Free Shopping Week Kicks Off In MD. After last week’s roller coaster ride on Wall Street, investors are hoping for a better week starting Monday when Maryland shoppers can buy certain items tax-free.The week is a break from the 6 percent sales tax on shoes and clothes under $100. Umbrellas, watches and sunglasses also are considered tax free. “This is a gift, really, to consumers in Maryland. We want to give them a break because the economic recession has really hammered them,” said state Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Man Accused Of Choking Mother, Stabbing Step Father In Brooklyn Park. Anne Arundel County police said they charged a 25-year-old man with choking his mother and repeatedly stabbing his intervening stepfather.The suspect was identified as Jesse Chapman.According to police, the family was asleep early Sunday when Chapman returned to his Brooklyn Park home intoxicated. During an argument with his 51-year-old mother, he began choking and assaulting her, according to police.

Purse Stolen From 86-Year Old Woman In Annapolis. Anne Arundel County police were looking for the man they said stole a woman’s purse Saturday and then fled in a stolen car.Officers were called to the 2300 block of Forest Drive in Annapolis for a report of a purse snatching at about 4:30 p.m.They spoke with an 86-year-old woman who said she was getting out of her car when a man grabbed her purse from her arm and then ran to a vehicle parked across the street and drove away.

Rain, Flooding Keep Rescue Crews Busy. Hours of heavy downpours caused flooding over the weekend and into the early part of the work week, trapping people in their disabled vehicles.On Monday morning, southbound Ritchie Highway in front of the MVA and Bellegrove Road at 10th Avenue were shut down due to high water. 11 News is also headed to the scene of a swift water rescue in Baltimore County.
