Recovering Addict From AACC Wins National Honor

Recent Anne Arundel Community College graduate Daniel D. Brannon of Annapolis was honored in Washington, D.C., this week as a Pearson Prize National Fellow and is one of 20 recipients of the $10,000 Pearson Prize for Higher Education.

The Pearson Foundation gives these awards to recognize exemplary students at two- and four-year colleges and universities who give back to their community while completing their undergraduate degrees. Brannon, 47, earned an AACC Associate of Applied Science degree this May in addiction counseling and is transferring to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

The son of an alcoholic and a recovering addict himself, Brannon excelled academically at AACC and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Omicron Theta Chapter. He worked full time to pay for his studies while also volunteering his time, resources and leadership to numerous organizations.

Brannon organizes fundraisers for humanitarian causes locally and worldwide. A talented musician, he advocates the power of music and the arts to reach at-risk youth and adults. He volunteers with his church to have music and arts outlets for teens and hopes one day to start a nonprofit arts organization for at-risk youth.

The Pearson Prize is administered by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Personal videos documenting the 20 National Fellows’ achievements are online at http://www.pearsonfoundation.org/pearsonprize/2011/fellows.html.
