Erie Rallies In Eighth To Top Baysox

Trailing by one run, the Seawolves scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to come from behind and beat the Baysox 4-3 Thursday evening. With the loss, the Baysox fell to 71-59 on the season and saw their lead on third place Richmond fall to one and a half games after a win by the Flying Squirrels.

Bowie scored three runs to take the early lead in the fourth inning, but failed to add any more runs later in the game, allowing Erie to come back and win. It was the fifth time this season the Baysox have lost when leading after the seventh inning.

Despite outhitting the SeaWolves 7-6, the Baysox offense struggled in the second half of the game, moving just one runner to second base after the big fourth inning.

The Baysox struck first in the top of the fourth inning against Erie starter Trevor Feeney, who was making his Double-A debut. First baseman Joe Mahoney drew a lead off walk and went to second on a balk before advancing to third on a single to left field by third baseman Brandon Waring. Catcher Caleb Joseph walked to load the bases and designated hitter Aaron Baker plated the first run on a sacrifice fly. Two more runs scored when shortstop Pedro Florimon singled to put the Baysox up 3-0.

Erie got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning against left-handed starting pitcher Mike Ballard when Bryan Holaday hit a lead off home run to left field to make the score 3-1.

The SeaWolves cut the lead to one with another run in the seventh inning. With one out, Rawley Bishop doubled to left field and scored when Holaday doubled to left field make the score 3-2. Right-handed reliever Armando Gabino then replaced Ballard on the mound and finished the inning.

Erie took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners at first and second base with no outs, Brandon Douglas attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Joseph threw out the lead runner at third leaving runners at first and second base. After a balk by Gabino advanced the runners, Justin Henry was intentionally walked to load the bases. Bryan Pounds then plated the first run on a sacrifice fly and a second run scored when Bishop singled to left field to put Erie ahead 4-3.

Ballard pitched six and one-third innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four, but he did not factor into the decision. Gabino pitched one and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on two hits as he was tagged with his second blown save and second loss of the season.

Two balks were called in the game Thursday, one against each team. Feeney was called for a balk in the fourth inning and the Baysox took advantage by scoring three runs in the inning. Gabino was called for a balk in the eighth inning, leading to two critical runs for the SeaWolves.

Florimon paced the Baysox offense Thursday night with two hits and two RBIs, increasing his season RBI total to 54, good enough for a tie for second place on the team.

Friday, RHP Tim Bascom (8-3, 3.26) takes the mound for the Baysox as take on the Erie SeaWolves. His opponent will be LHP Jay Voss (9-6, 3.33).

The Baysox began a four game road trip to Erie Thursday, Aug. 25 and return home for eight games Monday, Aug. 29. The upcoming home stand is the last one of the regular season and a chance for fans to see the Baysox clinch a spot in the Eastern League playoffs.
