Annapolis Remembers 9-11 With Chorale Concerts

To remember the events of 9/11 and recall lives lost that day in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, PA, Live Arts Maryland Music Director J. Ernest Green will conduct two free concerts performed by The Annapolis Chorale and Annapolis Chamber Orchestra.  The centerpiece of both events is WA Mozart’s moving “Requiem,” the same piece the Chorale performed on the first anniversary of 9/11 as part of the international Rolling Requiem.  Soloists for these performances are soprano Carolene Winter, mezzo Catrin Davies, tenor J Bitner and bass Brendan Cooke.

At 4 p.m. on the 11th, Mr. Green and the Chorale will perform the “Requiem” as part of a service of remembrance at St. Anne’s Parish in downtown Annapolis.  At 7 p.m. at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the group will again perform the “Requiem” along with Mozart’s “Ave Verum,” and the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra will perform Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” a haunting piece strongly associated with the events of 9/11.

The service and the concert are free and all are invited to share in the remembrance.  Says Mr. Green, “We performed this Requiem nine years ago on the first anniversary of 9/11 and it was the most difficult and emotional performance I’ve ever conducted.  I feel exactly the same way today.  I am honored that we can offer these performances to the community as a way for everyone to come together and remember those we lost that day.”

Partnering with Live Arts Maryland in presenting these 9/11 concerts are Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and St. Anne’s Parish.  Additional support comes from Minute Man Press.  For more information about the concerts visit www.liveartsmaryland.org.

At 8:30 a.m. on 9/11, Mr. Green and members of the Annapolis Chorale will participate with County Executive John Leopold, Col. Edward C. Rothstein, the commander of Fort George G. Meade, and others in a ceremony of remembrance at the Anne Arundel County 9/11 Memorial in Millersville, which features two steel beams from the Center.
