UPDATE 1:27pm 07/31/2011: According to ABC2 News, the body of Charles Ryder has been recovered. Ryder was seen going overboard from a moving boat last night in the Riviera Beach community of Pasadena. Ryder’s death marks the 14th fatality in the waters of Anne Arundel County this year.
Rescue crews found the body of a boater who went missing Saturday in Anne Arundel County.
Officials were called to the creek near Riviera Beach just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday after witnesses saw 48-year-old Charles Ryder jump off the back of the 20ft. boat and not resurface.
The Coast Guard, Anne Arundel Fire, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police and Maryland State Police searched for Ryder Saturday night, but were not able to find his body until just after noon on Sunday.
As reported earlier today, there was a serious accident between a speed boat and a sailboat in the South River late last night that sent three people to the hospital.
Between 5:00pm and approximately midnight, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, Coast Guard, and the MD Department of Natural Resources were kept busy with three separate boating accidents which could prove to be fatal to two individuals.
The first incident occurred at 5:01 pm when crews were dispatched for an overturned boat in the mouth of the South River near Thomas Point. A civilian vessel rescued two people and took them to the US Coast Guard Station in Annapolis where they were transported to Shock Trauma. A 39 year old male was flown by helicopter with life threatening injuries. A 32 year old male was transported by ambulance with serious but not life threatening injuries. There is no report on how the vessel may have capsized.
At 5:21pm, crews were dispatched to Stoney Creek for a man who jumped off of his boat and had not resurfaced. Crews were dispatched to the area of Main Avenue and Park Avenue in the Riviera Beach community. Marine and dive units from the County were assisted by the Baltimore City Fire Department, DNR, and Coast Guard. Crews searched the area and the “last known location” with side sweeping sonar with no results. The search was called off last night at dark and resumed at daylight this morning. According to Division Chief Michael Cox of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, it is still an active search, however it has turned from a rescue effort to a recovery effort.
Prior to these accidents, the County has seen 13 water fatalities this year with at least one more month of the peak boating season. 2010 deaths were 12.
