There was a fatal motorcycle accident last night on Nabbs Creek Road in Pasadena. From the Anne Arundel County Police:
On 7/23/2011 Officers from the Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Departments responded to Nabbs Creek Rd. near the intersection with Francis Rd. for a report of a motorcycle crash. Upon arrival Officers located two motorcycles in the wooded area adjacent to the east bound lane of Nabbs Creek Rd. Officers also located an unresponsive male subject lying in the woods next to a green 1998 Home made custom built motorcycle displaying MD tag 200D95. This subject was later identified as James Alton Cockrell w/m 52 years old of 209 A Mountain Rd. Pasadena MD 21122. Mr. Cockrell was triaged by paramedics from the Fire Department who declared him dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Cockrell had been travelling west on Nabbs Creek Rd. with a group of two other motorcycles, with whom he had been riding with most of the day on 7/23/2011. Mr. Cockrell had just left the Nabbs Creek Café, located at 864 Nabbs Creek Rd. Glen Burnie, MD 21061. As the group reached a sharp curve in the roadway near the intersection with Francis Rd. it is reported that an unknown make and model silver or white compact car travelling east on Nabbs Creek Rd may have crossed the center line and encroached in the west bound lane of traffic. The rider in front of Mr. Cockrell reportedly reacted to the aforementioned vehicle and laid his motorcycle down on the roadway to avoid a collision with this unknown vehicle. It appears that Mr. Cockrell began to brake in reaction to the first motorcycle going down. Mr. Cockrell then travelled off of the roadway into a wooded area adjacent to the east bound lane of traffic. Once off of the roadway Mr. Cockrell was ejected from his motorcycle which fell onto its left side.
This crash is being investigated by the Traffic Safety Section. Mr. Cockrell was not wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash. Alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in this case.
