3 City Businesses Earn Certification

As part of his Clean and Green City initiative, Mayor Joshua J. Cohen is proud to announce that the City has certified three more Annapolis restaurants in recognition of their sustainable practices.

The Environmental Stewardship Certification Program allows restaurants to earn points from a checklist of categories including: serving local food, energy efficiency improvements, water conservation, environmental education efforts and more.  One hundred out of nine hundred available points must be earned to qualify for the initial two-year certification.

After restaurants submit their application to the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs, they must meet with staff prior to being awarded certification.  This gives DNEP staff an opportunity to suggest additional improvements.

The three new Certified Environmental Stewards are:

The Westin Annapolis Hotel & Azure Restaurant – 100 Westgate Circle: One of only two Westin Hotels worldwide that has fostered relationships with local farmers to provide its meat and produce needs (the other is Paris Westin). Executive Chef James Barrett uses honey in his recipes from two hives he keeps on the second floor roof. Azure purchases most of its meat and eggs from Ivy Neck Farms, a local and organic farm in Harwood.

The Metropolitan – 169 West St.: The Metropolitan specializes in farm-to-table dining, sourcing its ingredients from local farms and purveyors.  It incorporates sustainable, earth-friendly, grass-fed meats, and healthy food into its philosophy.  Most of the items on the menu contain local ingredients, and much of their beer, wine, and liquor are domestically sourced.

Vin 909 – 909 Bay Ridge Ave.: The kitchen in this Eastport wine café uses its own organic herbs and vegetables grown in the back garden behind the patio. Executive Chef Justin Moore makes his own mozzarella, and over half of his menu items feature local ingredients.

The city has also awarded certifications for lodging, auto repair shops, retail stores and office buildings.

This free voluntary certification program is part of the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs’ Sustainable Annapolis initiative, protecting and improving the environmental health of our neighborhoods and watersheds.  For more information contact Jeanna Beard, DNEP Environmental Program Coordinator at 410-263-7946.
