Commission Celebrates ADA Anniversary

Ginger Palmer, of  Edgewater, chairman of the Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues, cuts a chocolate cake in celebration of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26,1990, during a commission meeting on Tuesday [July 26] in Annapolis.

The world’s first comprehensive declaration of equality for people with disabilities, the law is intended “to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.” Over 54 million Americans with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit daily activities are protected under the ADA. These activities include working, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, or caring for oneself. People who have a record of such an impairmentand those regarded as having an impairment are also protected.

The county Commission meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Heritage Office Complex in Annapolis to craft policy and legislative recommendations for the county executive and county council. For information, call 410-222-4383 or visit www.aacounty.org/aging.
